Who else has S.A.D.?
Some seasons I do better than others. This apparently isn't one of them.

I've been under lots of stress lately and haven't kept up with my exercise because I've been busy re-arranging my house and decluttering.

I've indulged my carb cravings too much lately, so I'm back on that roller coaster again. Bread, pasta, anything sweet.

And, I'm tired, so tired. Napping on the weekends and going to bed early during the week. Heck, I'm just getting off work and I'm ready to just eat dinner and go to bed.

How I hate this! Anyone care to join me in my self-pity wallow?

1. I have it for sure
I've been trying to spend my lunch hour in the park to get some sun, but it's been raining all week! :(

sunshine doesn't get me down, but I've preferred rain and gloom as long as I can remember (but I live in SoCal)

7. I think that was one of the triggers
I still am in a state of shock and disbelief. And then when I hear they are planning to dismantle Social Security and environmental protections and then how badly things are going in the ME. It's enough to depress anyone.

35. I like cloudy, rainy, and cool weather, too.
I've got the opposite of S.A.D. Heat, sun, and bright light make me feel awful and slow down. Always look forward to fall and fresh, cool air. Love rain and snow, especially when either comes down hard.

I like sunshine in the fall or winter, when it doesn't make me sweat or burn.

6. No way - snap out of it!
Get one of those ultra-expensive full-spectrum lites and go outside and walk around in fresh air several times a day. We're counting on you.

9. Yes
Lucky me - living in Seattle.

Last night I made myself a luau with poi, Maui ribs, POG, sashimi and all kinds of island goodies, trying to bring some sun into my particularly dreary life.

I'm not handling this winter and holiday season very well, to put it mildly.

Take care of yourself.

Sounds like a fun little party.

I know I shouldn't whine. There's like millions of people in this world that have it worse.

If you get particularly desperate, you can always fly out to Chicago to see us. I can't promise you better weather, but lots of good people for sure.

17. I would love to come visit
It would definitely be a great time. I used to have a friend there, but we had a falling out over politics, believe it or not. (Yes, he's a staunch freeper living in Evanston. Go figure.)

But someday I will make it back there, and damn right, we'll have a party. I don't care if it's 30 below! :hi:

13. I only get it as we approach the solstice and beyond
it's depressing thinking about longer days. I love getting up in the dark, and coming home from work in the dark, and not having the sun out shining for days and days on end (because of cloud cover) so that it isn't shining in my eyes or making the inside of the car hot or the inside of the apartment hot...

Daylight - it's over-rated. I'm not a big sunlight fan (though I appreciate the essential nature of it for life on earth).

But I understand I am an anomoly, and I am sorry that you suffer from SAD. It can be awful to deal with. My partner doesn't deal well with rainy or cloudy days. Me, I keep thinking Seattle or Antarctica in the winter or Scotland would be just right for me.

14. This has been the worst holiday ever for me.
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 10:37 PM by Flammable Materials
I haven't put up the tree, sent cards, nothing.

I'm quite literally flat broke. I might be apologizing to either my apartment manager or my utility company for a bounced check tomorrow. Work has been horrible, twice the workload and everyone's in a shitty mood. No bonus of any kind. The company offered to "take the department out for Christmas lunch" with a maximum of $10 per person. I decided to stay in the office and man the phones because I just wasn't in the mood to participate in (what to me was) an insult of the Ebenezer Scrooge variety. My boss opted to get something for me at the restaurant anyway from my "allotment", and when she got back, I was informed that I owed the company 43 cents.

If this is what the next four years are going to be like, I think I'm going to spend the next them destroying myself with alcohol or drugs.

33. you aren't alone
So many of us are suffering under Bush policies.

Have you thought about applying for energy assistance? In some areas funds are available. Your power company will have info.

I guess some of us are going to have to double up and share living expenses. There doesn't seem to be any other way we are going to get through.

16. It started when I moved to Iowa
I've switched to sheer curtains in my office and I try to make a point of getting up and exercising each day. Still, once the holidays are over, I start to decline until I see grass and sunshine again (usually sometime in April). I'm looking forward to the day when we move to a warmer climate.

I spent 2 years at RIT and the practically 6-month winter wasn't insignificant in my decision to transfer back home.

I certainly hope you have one of those sunlight lamps - or at least that you enjoy that gorgeous (but short) summer to its fullest!

And this year I definitely blame Bush and the Repubs.

I'm obsessively reading DU and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Right now I have a bag of York Peppermint Patties with me in bed. Yesterday I had a box of Mallomars. Soon the shame spiral....

Let the wallowing begin!

27. Yep
You got it. The thing is that when you get caught in the middle of it, you can see the signs, recognize it coming, but almost feel powerless to stop it and then beat yourself up for not being strong enough.

I *know* what I need to do, but sometimes I just need to wallow a bit before moving on. Plus, I'm having a really bad bought of PMS this month, probably induced by the carb overload, which hasn't helped.

Well, don't stay in that place too long. I know I don't plan on it.

31. Big time
When my sister (the shrink) was in grad school, her adviser was doing a research study on SAD. She said that if we hadn't been related, I would have been a sure thing to be included (conflict of interest, since she was working on the data).

It doesn't help that all my other annoying illnesses are fatigue-related. Maybe humans should hibernate like bears, I sure seem to want to.

Do you get the thing where you get exhausted and either nap or just drag ass around, and then get an irritating second wind that keeps you up way too late, making you feel like crap the next day? That's been my modus operandi for the past week. God, I wish I could drink coffee!

I was so tired at the start of the evening, wanting to go to bed by 8, but I made myself stay up and I couldn't get to sleep until 1 a.m. I just slept through an hour of my alarm going off. :silly:

36. Yes, I've had it since before it had a name.
It comes every year shortly after the hummingbirds leave (mid-Sept.), gets really bad when we go on standard time, reaches its worst around Feb. 1, and is gone by the time the hummers return (May.)
