my 600th post: on crayons and love |
|
We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors ... but they all have to learn to live in the same box. ~-Robert Fulghum
on my grade school crush: she happened to be the most popular girl in the class and that doesn't go over very well if your the least popular, quiet kid of the class. I was literally pushed into asking her out and she said she didn't know, but it was obviously no, but being the stupid kid i was, i went that whole weekend agonizing if she was going to say yes. She did say no, but at the urging of her friends. I like to think that she really wanted to say yes, but that's just me. Now she probably has a nice boyfriend and is at a top school.
tell me about your grade school crushes!

And I'm sure your crush did want to say yes, but you know now peer pressure can be.
On Edit: Congrats on 600 posts! :toast:

3. congrats... and stories |
|
first - I have nothing to add about crayons...
second - first "crush" I remember, I am embarassed to admit - was in kindergarten...other girls played house... I liked to play at the "general store" with the boys (and one in particular). So odd was this at the time, that the teacher even commented upon this on one of my first report cards. Can't remember the details - a long time ago, and a crush in kindergarten is quite a bit more naive (and what the heck is a crush at that age anyhow?!)... What he is doing today? No idea - but that he let a "girl" play with the boys back then makes me think that he was instinctively progressive - so hopefully he is fighting the good fight today.
Odder story was witnessed by some duers last fall. Will Pitt came to town to speak and a number of folks from the region came to town to meet and hear him speak (and two became a serious DU couple as a result!)... we go out to a bar afterwards. A really stoned dude stumbles up to our table and starts an inane discussion... says he is in town to do a documentary on x... I ask if that is xy (adding last name)... he says yes, that is my father... I look at the stoned dude and blurt out (before I can - and should - have stopped myself) and say to the group ... this guy was my first official date ever (in eighth grade - on bikes)... Mind you more than 20+ years have passed... the guy then sits down and joins us and launches into an "you were the one that got away... no one could ever measure up" (stoned) speech. Based on one "date" all those years ago. Needless to say - never heard from the dude after that night... though on rare occaision at DU... I am reminded of the interesting, witnessed, "reunion".

4. Oh I love the crayon quote |
|
I was in love with a boy named Russell and he was so cute. We used to walk to school together. and play kick ball with the neighbor kids in my yard. I believe that was the 5th grade. I don't know what ever happened to him. After I went to Jr. High I found other interests and other boys, but now and then I think of Russell and those Innocent days

5. Perhaps Russell is coaching |
|
kid soccer these days... and vicariously re-enjoying the innocence of the age you shared.

Her name is Deborah (full name not exposed to protect the innocent). She was dreamy. Long, straight, dark hair...beautiful eyes...young (we were in first grade). We were friends, but I wanted more. Hand holding, milk sharing, a kick in the shins because I had cooties. Yeah. She moved away the next year.
Now? She's in power, somewhere. High profile attorney, defending the weak and innocent. Maybe a member of Congress (one of those "good ones" that do it all right, but we never hear about). Sigh...
