1. hell yes, anyone who doesn't write their own damn music for starters
and, for a more specific example, Toby Keith.

6. Don't Know Much About Toby Keith...
but I do know that Kid Rock is a total invention....

He's the son of a Detroit car dealer who trys to pass himself off as a street creation....

And he's a * supporter...

8. i don't like kid crap; i think his music sucks, and i hate the jingoistic
bullshit he uses in his "videos". that being said, i DESPISE any artists who don't even write their own material; i think that's extremely lame.

12. If You Have A Great Voice Or Style It's O K Not To Write Your Own Stuff...
Sinatra, Aretha Frankin, Elvis did great stuff with other people's work but Kid Rock's style is totally fabricated and inauthentic...

14. at least he wrote it
i still don't like people who don't write their own stuff, they're as "manufactured" as anyone else. i'll make an exception for the above performers b/c they could actually sing live (as many of today's "artists"/lip-synchers dont/cant).

18. There is nothing wrong with stylists
There has always been teeny bopper commercial music. It needs to be there to keep the talented ones on their toes.
Wasting your energy on "despising" someone because they are making money for entertainment is a little bit of wasted energy...no?

I lost some of that extra energy now that I am 40... But it wasn't THAT long ago that I remember having some to pass around. :)

19. Lots of great performers
Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet,Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and many others have all done some great songs that they did not write. Gaye, Charles and Jackson were all great songwriters in their own right though.

Sometimes being a good song interpretor is just as legitimate as being a good songwriter. What I despise is manufactured bullshit with little soul or feeling (like Britney and her ilk.)

23. And some songwriters can't sing their way out of a paper bag....
They may go on the folkie circuit & release records on small labels for their fans. Besides lacking singing chops, some may also have personal demons that stand in the way of a high-powered performing career. But having their songs recorded by more popular artists supplies them with an income.

Lyle Lovett has written some fine tunes but recorded an album of "covers." Step Inside This House* is a 2-CD set of songs by the (mostly) Texas songwriters that inspired him. One of the CD's is devoted to Townes van Zandt & Walter Hyatt--both now deceased. Lyle's collection paid a tribute of respect to writers he's admired--& a real tribute of royalties to them or their survivors.

--------------

* Not to be confused with "Slip Inside This House" which is a whole other volume of The Annals of Texas Music.

4. Although........................
he's FAR down the list in my book, yes, there are MANY worse. Brittney Spears, Jessica Simpson, the entire genre of Country and Western come to mind along with numerous others. Rock is certainly not the bottom of the barrel, but you can see the bottom from there.

Hey Bob what exactly does growing up in a upper class suburb in Detroit qualify you for being the spokesman for Toby Keith fans the world over?

And, i'm not a Kid Rock fan. Don't loathe him, but he doesn't do much for me. (Except the first hit.) But, there are lots worse.

26. Two words: "Jessica Simpson"
Face of an angel, yes, but there's hardly anything behind those eyeballs. At least she was saved from becoming another contemporary Christian pop singer - I saw part of her demo tape.

:scared:

At least I hear a guitar in some of Kid Rock's stuff.

29. It's the faux-rock shit that kills me.
I don't mind Britney Spears and all the rest of the pop starlets (Jessica Simpson, especially) because, well, they have no pretense that they're actually *doing* anything of any "real" artistic merit.

It's the "earnest rock-guy" that raises my shackles- it's just fake. So fake. Like Linkin Park, Stains, Creed/Alter Bridge, Hoobastank (OH MY GOD, Hoobastank). It's music solely produced for the Hot Topic "I'm so independent, just like all my friends" crowd, and it makes me want to rip my fucking hair out.
