I'm just curious if advertising is an industry that should be eliminated as having no positive effect at all (besides employing people too smart to be counter help and too unskilled to be anything more productive).

1. Yesterday
...I bought the Affinity carpet cleaner because it looked easy to use and my dog still insists on using my daughter's room as the bathroom. The carpet is new, it was expensive, so I am trying to preserve it.

17. put a bowl of dog food on his fave potty place in her room.
And let him out more often, accompanied, with a resounding CHEER when he doodies outside (I mean like he won the lottery-style-cheer).

Should work.

21. This creature is in and out all day
...but if she is on the third floor, it is easier to potty in the hallway/my daughter's room than go all the way downstairs. Additionally, she won't go out when it rains. Very persnickety.

Not a value judgement--but think about it. Keep her off the third floor until she breaks the habit, then. She's a dog. She can learn. Budward the Black Lab hates the rain, too (although he'll spend all day in the pool--go figure) but darnit, if he's doing gotta-pee dance at the backdoor, we push him out there and he's fine.

In those NPR sketches where he played the food maker named Schwetty.

"You never forget the look on a kid's face the first time he wraps his mouth around a Schwetty wiener."

They make those Schwetty balls, too.

22. I used to have a Venus.
When I moved and lost it, I got another Venus. So I still have a Venus. I didn't need a commercial to know that they're pretty good razors. (Though it was a commercial that enticed me to buy one in the first place.)

15. what kind of advertising ?
The things advertised on TV -- fast cars, fast food -- I don't buy because I am low income and my budget is tiny.

However, I get some direct mail that I have requested from sellers I'm interested in, and when there is a real steal, I will buy those products. The last thing I bought that I would not have otherwise known to buy was a bird tour. I am on the guide's mailing list, I like his work, so I am interested in buying new tours if I can afford the time and money.

My hypothesis is that print works better than radio or TV. I can't remember the last time I saw something on TV that I wanted. Maybe it was a Quiznos sub. I liked those spongmonkeys. ;)

Why do they advertise on TV? Has a TV perfume ad ever made you want to buy the product?

25. When I watch TV, I'm a more cynical TV watcher
than I used to be. Knowing that commercials are designed to make me want something that I don't really need, something I wouldn't have considered buying if not for the ad... I'm not as easily enticed to buy.

34. I bought one of the
Showtime rotisseries. And I'm really, really, really glad I did. I don't expect products to live up to their hype but this one does...at least for the cooking part, can't swear to the weight loss claim. We use it at least once a week and I haven't found anything that it doesn't do as well as, if not better than, other methods of cooking.

37. I do not respond to TV or radio ads; in fact, I must run away from them.
However, I am open to **specific** e-mail or print ads that announce a significant percent-off sale at a place that I have shopped.

Example: I recently received an e-mail from Restoration Hardware that announced a two-day, 20% off everything sale. My wife and I bought some bookcases from "Resto" last year, and we wanted another, so we took the plunge. They're pricey as hell, but this eased the sting a bit.

39. Really Never. My Opinion Is That. . .
. . .commercials seldom get anybody to DECIDE to get a thing. They influence the choice as to which brand they'll buy, once they've already decided to get a "thing" like that.

IOW, someone doesn't go buy a BMW because of the commercial. But, once they've decided it's time for a new car, and they've decided, with no extrinsic influence, they want a luxury coupe, the BMW commercial makes them think Beamer.

Same thing with restaurants. I've never gotten up off the couch and said to my wife "Hey, let's go out to Red Lobster". But, when we decide we're going out to eat, the commercial might make me say "You know it's lobsterfest at Red Lobster." We didn't decide to go out to eat because of the commercial. Only which restaurant we wanted to go to was influenced once that decision was already made.

40. They certainly spend a huge amount of dollars to get you to think that.
Has anyone done a study of how much bang they get for their advertising buck? How much does Shell or ExxonMobil get pretending to be defenders of the environment in their advertising?

I was convinced by a TV ad to buy (or ask around about) the Pizzaz Pizza cooker. Great little device. Takes about half the time, makes the pizza taste better and no pre-heating. Plus, very easy to clean. A bit pricy ($99 at the time), though, so I asked for it as a Christmas gift from my parents.
