Your most hated Christmas Carol....
Let's have some fun here. My most hated carol is "The 12 Days of Christmas." First of all, it's too damn long and just plain silly. When was the last time you saw a partridge in a pear tree?

25. I don't like those either.
Unfortunately they were must sings every year when I was growing up. The church I went to as a kid was founded by German immigrants (my Grandma was one of them), so we sang the first verse of Silent Night in German on Christmas Eve every year.

I'm not crazy about The Little Drummer Boy either. Too many pa rum pa pum pums.

3. it depends who's singing it
the carolers at the door - it's usually nice.

The family gathered round the piano after drinking a gallon of mom's "special" eggnog and six straight hours of eating rich high volume methane producing foods . . . not so much fun.

In some versions of the song.... The second line of the first verse is: "the Lord is come"....

It just doesn't strike me as proper English...

8. That one about the kid asking for shoes for her mom....
Yeah, I know it's not technically a Christmas Carol but it's a Christmas song. And I know it's supposed to tug at my heart strings but it just annoys me. Total maudlin pap in a pop-country veneer. And I'm not one who normally politicizes ANY popular culture whatsoever, but I can't help listening to this and finding myself getting annoyed politically.

27. Most of the traditional Christmas carols
were written over 100 years ago. Those written in the minor keys, like 3 kings, God rest ye merry gentlemen, o come Immanuel, etc sound Phantom of the Opera-ish to our ears today.

and welcome! I sent the link to my aunt. I'm agnostic, but interested in religion. Makes the song a little more bearable!

:hi:

On edit: My least fave carol is Away in a Manger. Oh the horror of little children forced to sing that dull tune every freakin' Christmas!

24. that is a recent invention of the hidden meaning
The "hidden meaning" that the 12 days is somehow some far-fetched church symbolism is an internet rumor that has been going around for a few years but not real convincing. There is nothing hidden about the 12 days of Christmas -- it is simply the 12 days of travel time it took from the birth and the sighting of the star for the wise men to actually reach the manger.

I used to have an old book that said the 12 gifts in the 12 days of Christmas were all birds but some of the language got distorted over the many hundreds of years. Many of the gifts are still explicitly birds. The "five golden rings" are ring-necked pheasants, which are brassy-gold in the sunshine and which were introduced into Europe in medieval times from China. Swans, geese, pheasants, hens, etc. are obviously birds, but some of the gifts are a little more difficult to identify. I would assume the drummers drumming are grouse. Modern people have little knowledge of grouse because they have just about been wiped out -- in case you are unfamiliar with them, I'll just mention that they are birds famous for gathering together and "drumming" to serenade their females who then pick the best "drummers" for their sexual pleasure. I'll spare the entire analysis but, as hidden meanings go, this makes more sense to me because the meaning became partly obscured/hidden just by the passage of time.

By contrast, people in late medieval times would not have to hide that they were singing about the Christian church. Quite the opposite.

No one really knows but there is nothing "hidden" about the Epiphany theme so I'll vote that if a "hidden" meaning is required it may be about the near-worship of the female by gifting her with an ever-escalating supply of gifts. Maybe the "courtly love" tradition of female worship comes into play here somewhere.

28. My least fave is "Kill all brown, black, red and yellow people in the
name of the Holy Baby" Doesn't really have a tune, but the machine-guns, bombs, and landmines make for a heck of a percussion section.
