Can you believe this....
I was at the store early this morning and had bought 4 12 packs of Pepsi on sale and some other small items. I was at the checkout and a woman was unloading her groceries in front of me. A man walked up behind me with one item I told him to go ahead, as I was in no hurry. So he did. The woman was done unloading all put a tray of cat food and a large bag of dog food, and mind you there was plenty of room, so I used the end of the conveyor to up my pops up in stacks of 2 each...do you get the picture, not taking up room. On top of that I stacked 5- 4lbs bags of sugar and some pop tarts next to that. Not taking up more than the very end of the counter. The conveyor began to move and the woman began to get pissed then UGLY. She picked up my pops and literally threw them back until they were off the conveyor t the end of the counter. Now remember there is a man between us with one item. She scared that checkout girl so bad I thought she would cry. The man is looking at the woman as if she has 2 heads. Bags of sugar went everywhere when she did that and all she managed to to was shorten the space she had plenty of room to unload into. The more she shoved the worse it got. The girl couldn't check her outta there quick enough and of course the conveyor continued to move.. I just let it... I started to say something but that nut was doing such good job of making a mess, I just let her. The man looked at me like....wow... a I said I think she needs a pill, the woman behind me made the comment she hoped the woman didn't have a gun, and didn't need one. What would you have done. She actted like she needed to locked up

1. Store security/management should have called the cops.
I'd have had my cell phone out and been dialing 911 without saying another word.

12. This sort of event isn't uncommon, although sugar everywhere maybe
You did the right thing by letting the person independently freak out.

People are very space sensitive and checkout lines are just one of the grocery store circumstances that create spacial (aka spatial) conflicts that bring out ugliness.

Others include:

Service counters without clear lines...resulting in elbowing moves that would make basketball history while struggling to get Bakery, Deli Clerks attention.

Clerks are "in the way" as they restock shelves so customers can have things to buy...where I work this problem seems worse around the bananas...

Shopper has access to meat blocked, and might get a better/cheaper piece of flesh than person(s) trying to shop the same display.

Shopper has isle blocked with shopping cart on the left while shopping the rack to the right...

Among children, it is watching another kid (particularly a sibling)get into the last available Cart-mobile. The person who thought these things up really did not know child psychology.

I am sure you can add to the list...

The odd thing is that in most of their interactions these irritated folks demonstrate they did very well in kindergarten.

3. some people are crazy - nothing you can do about it
clearly her territorial gene was expressing. I'm just surprised she didn't hike a leg up and mark the conveyor belt when she was done.

6. That was sort of the impression I got
she was to important to share the counter with the two of us. There were only 2 check outs open, but there were 5 people in 2 lines. I laughed at her and I think it mad her worse. But lets just say I couldn't help myself. She looked like a total IDIOT. I did ask the check out girl why she didn't call the manager and she said she just didn't think of it.

11. She walked over to the service desk afterward and
EVERYONE was standing at the 2 registers were talking about how stupid she acted and no one was being quiet about it. She was to dumb to be embarrassed I think. Wouldn't you hate to live with someone like that?

10. There's a story I'll try to repeat accurately, about two women who
had an encounter similar to this;

The woman was in the dairy section of the grocery store picking up milk, etc. Another woman came in, in hysterics and started yelling about not finding the right kind of yoghurt. She needed a special flavor, and raised holy ruckus with the staff in the back. "Why wasn't it out there, when would they have it, why was everyone so incompetent..." screaming, yelling at the top of her lungs, frightening everyone. Clearly she was nuts.

The first woman tried to calm the second one down... and while they were waiting as the staff frantically searched for THAT flavor of yoghurt, the distraught woman explained that her 23 year old son was in the hospital dying of AIDs. The only thing he could and would eat was that one flavor of yoghurt... and it was the only comfort she could provide him.

and it all made just a little more sense after that.

Sometimes, once in a while, things aren't what they seem.

13. Maybe you are right
but mostly she had dog and cat food.... I couldn't see what else she had ....as my things were busy flying through the air... perhaps her cat was at home having a kitty fit for some of that cheap cat food. Or perhaps she just doesn't have any manners and was never taught any patience

15. I waited out side and ran into a friend and chatted a few minutes
and one of the ladies in the store came out and made reference to the incident. I was hoping to see what she was driving. I thought the same thing myself. REPUK.She didn't come out. Probably still there raising hell about the checkout girl she scared half silly. I told the girl that my phone number was on the check if she got any grief from her I would be glad to tell them What happened

21. It's consumerism and entitlement....
I used to work at a small video store in a rich suburb. One busy Saturday, I had a guy come in asking for a copy of a movie he supposedly put on hold the day before. We had a policy at our store that you couldn't hold a movie for more than a day, so his movie had been checked out. He freaked out big time. He screamed, and threatened me. I kept asking him to stay calm, that I would notify him when it came in and he could rent it for free. He went ballistic, he kept screaming. He even wanted me to take a copy away from another customer and give it to him. I finally had to ask him to leave or I'd call the cops. Keep in mind I'm a very small woman, and was about 18 at the time. I can still remember the movie..."Broken Arrow". This guy was willing to go to jail for assaulting a woman, because he didn't get to see a cheesy action film with Travolta! It's so ridiculous it makes me laugh, but at the time I was scared to death.

would have acted that way no matter where she went this morning. She sounds like a very angry person, imagine what her family is like.
