What musicians have made for decent to good actors in TV, theater, films
David Bowie comes to mind as probably the best of the sub-set although that is probably due to his studies in theater and mime.

Dwight Yokum was pretty good in the Panic Room and I've heard he's been good in the one or two other films he's been in.

Ice-T is fun to watch in Law and Order:SVU and Ice Cube has also given some strong performances in some of his roles.

Hear Mick Jagger was pretty good as a gigilo (big surprise) in a small role from a relatively recent film as well.

Any others I'm missing?
-------------------------------------------------------
Now for the flip side:

Musicians that shouldn't be allowed into a movie/film studio ever again even as a part of tour group unless they are there strictly to work on a soundtrack:

Prince, Sting, Madonna

24. John Lurie was great in that and Stranger than Paradise.
I saw Down by Law as sort of a clash of NY and LA cool in the persons of Lurie and Waits. Interesting film.

35. Have you seen Fishing With John?
It's out on DVD now.

John Lurie takes various hip celeb-friends (Matt Dillon, Dennis Hopper, etc.) on exotic fishing adventures. It's very silly.

Can't believe I forgot Will Smith as he is definitely the most successful transition from music to film.

19. A lot of big producers and directors thought Elvis had potential
Unfortunately, Col. Parker was only interested in what could generate the most profit for the least amount of effort and effectively shut down any chance the King had to develop his talents in that field.

20. Jon Bonjovi was pretty good in a couple of things
(I forget what I saw him in.) Before he tried his hand at acting, he actually took some acting lessons. I have some respect for a person who tries to learn something about the craft of acting rather than feel that their celebrity entitles them to roles, whether they know anything about acting or not.

31. I think Sinatra was an outstanding
actor and could have made it as an actor alone if he hadn't been a singer. Cher is also a very talented actress. Other good ones include Harry Connick Jr., Queen Latifah, Will Smith, Sting and Mark Walberg. I think Barbra Streisand had very good comedic talent and was good in "screwball" comedies. Love her old movie "What's Up Doc" with Ryan O'Neal and also "For Pete's Sake." Two of her funniest.

36. David Bowie was my first and immediate choice
Sinatra was okay. Sting was great in "Dune", though I've not seen him in anything else - not that I know of, anway, so I really can't comment on him. Seems like he'd be a bit of a one-trick pony.

Bowie, though - awesome acting on film, awesome acting on stage (incredible in "Elephant Man").

38. Will Smith is a great actor. I also really liked 8 Mile
so I have to throw Eminem in there too. Ice-T is really good on Law and Order SVU. Ice Cube has turned in some decent performances as well.... I have to agree with you on Prince and Madonna. Sting I could watch simply because he fascinates me.
