Rummy and Diet Soda
If you drink diet soda, did you know that Donald Rumsfeld was CEO of Searle, the company that invented Aspartame (Nutrasweet), and that he personally pushed the FDA to approve its use after it was rejected several times? If so, does this bother you? I know that there hasn't been a study that proves anything wrong with Aspartame, but I still wonder sometimes when I start drinking a Diet Coke. This man is the most evil of all the Bush cronies, after all.

2. I once read an excellent article about this
The author had researched exactly how aspartame was approved for human consumption. That article made me vow never to ingest the stuff. At the time, the FDA's own chief medical officer ruled that it should not be approved, but the FDA overruled him, a highly unusual move.
Does anyone have a link to that article?

6. You can stop drinking soda, can't you?
I don't drink soda, and I'm not diabetic.

I really believe it's better for your body if you were to quit pumping chemical sugar-substitutes into it. It's not just the diabetes, it's all the other mystery maladies that have been linked to sugar substitutes.

For your health's sake, surely you can find something better to drink. How about Scotch?

10. PLEASE DON'T DRINK IT! Especially if you're diabetic!
Really bad sh*t! And as a diabetic your eyes are even more at risk than an average person's!
Read about aspartmae and stevia here:

http://www.vegsource.com/davis/sweeteners.htm

Stevia, btw, is very good for diabetics. It helps control blood sugar!
Read more on stevia at stevia.net.

But, coming back to your soda problem, it's true, there's nothing out there that doesn't contain sugar or aspartame. My husband and I are not diabetics but we kicked sugar (we fall off the wagon every so often, but not for more than a day or two) and now we basically drink no sodas at all.

We now drink tons of iced green tea. Brew a big bunch of concentrated green tea, add water or plain soda and serve iced....

And I'm going to go nake myself some hot cocoa now with stevia.... yum

8. that's why FDA won't put the sweetner Stevia on GRAS list
Aspartame is *really* bad for you. Actually has been shown to create tumors and mess up your eyesight and other stuff). The studies were so alarming that at firs the FDA didn't want to sic it on the population!

But thanks to Rumsfeld, many people are drinking it by the ton and unwittingly damaging their eyes and probably developing tumors.

Stevia is a sweetner millions have been using in South America for centuries and has no bad effects known in the scientific literature. The FDA, thanks for Rummy, almost banned it in the U.S. outright.

Read about it here:
http://www.vegsource.com/davis/sweeteners.htm

There's more at Stevia.net too.

Stevia, btw, is great stuff! Can't bake with it, though... Doesn't caramelize.

9. What about Splenda?
Is that bad too? I have some Stevia in my cupboard but its so bitter! I stopped using Nutrasweet a few years ago, not that I used that much of it but I stopped totally.

11. No, Splenda is also bad....
Splenda is a trademark name for sucralose. And the FDA shoved that stuff out the door so fast you'd have thought it was on wheels. No studies were done on the long-term consumption of sucralose. Not a one!

Sucralose will shrink your thymus glands. They play a critical role in your immune system. It'll also mess with other organs, like your liver and kidneys and other stuff. I researched it once and you can find the same info out there. Just google: sucralose dangers

My husband and I foud out about how bad it was and we stopped drinking it. Boy, it was like kicking some kind of drug! Our serotonin levels crashed hard and we stayed depressed for days. It was really a weird experience and we will never touch that crap again!

And don't even try using acesulfame or whatever it's called. That stuff is even worse for you than all of the others.

The only artificial sweetner I've found in my little research that has no reported adverse effects is erythritol. It's used mainly in Japan. Hard to find here except online although Hershey's has started using it in their lo-carb candy (but mixed with Splenda) *sigh* . You can make a decent cheesecake with it. Otherwise it's no good in baking.

12. Thanks,
sigh...I don't want to use sugar. Sugar is not good for you. Guess I will have to get used to no sweetness in anything I eat or drink.
