Who has cable DSL?
How is it working out for you?

I have DSL through the Verzion but I am considering cable DSL. We had had a problem with our phone line for several years. Intermittent static, disconnected calls. The phone company has been out many times but can’t seem to fix it. Apparently it is in one of their main cables and they don't want to be bothered. We are about to tell them if they can’t fix it to stick it, and just use our cell phones. That would leave me with no DSL hence the question.

:)

1. I have DSL at work, and cable modem at home.
The cable is far superior in reliability and is much faster.

The Verizon DSL at work is so-so in reliability (goes off-line more than the cable connection) and isn't as fast.

4. No such thing as "cable DSL"
but I know what you mean. :) I've had cable for about 3 years, and it's great. It only goes down about once every few months, and it's only for about 10 minutes. My previous DSL had much more down time, once going down for a week. I was happy to be rid of it.

6. I have cable through Adelphia
After initial setup woes, it works very reliably and fast.

My husband has SBC cable in Dallas and seems to love it.

7. Verizon DSL sucks.
I used it for almost a year and had numerous problems with it. I was too far away from the "switching Station" and should have never been sold it to start with. Our connection was never much better than a really fast Dial up. I have cable now, and it is a whole lot faster. Our average Speed on DSL was 250K vs our speed now which averages to about 2600K.... Yep Cable is better.

All you telecomm will eventually be over the cable. Phone, TV, Internet.

17. Man, I hope not
I run two webservers, a DNS server, and an email server on my $24.95 a month, 1.5mbit SBC residential DSL line. With DSL you're paying for the connection and the bandwidth, so most providers don't care what you're doing with it. If I were to switch to cable, I'd be booted offline within minutes of offering those services for TOS violations and would constantly have to worry about exceeding my transfer quotas.

Cable == Big Brother watching you.

DSL == The line is yours to do what you will.

20. that's very interesting info..I will research it
my comments are based on my experience as a consumer. The cable option is proving to be most convenient and is crowding out other technologies. It will continue this way until TV programming can be delivered on the web. Its the TV that keeps cable in the game.

24. Another thing with cable
you will probably find static IP is not available. Certainly isn't with my cable service (NTL, UK) anyway.

9. Time Warner Road Runner
Very happy with it, for the most part. Very fast. It goes down when your cable goes down (of course) which in my case is about three to five times a year. And when they couldn't properly troubleshoot a problem last year, the whole building's cable was down for a couple of days. If you can live with however frequently your cable service is interrupted, I say go for it.

10. Neither was available when we first moved to this neighborhood,
but cable became available recently. I LOVE it, but my husband swears his DSL at work is faster. From what I understand, though, the further you are from the hub (telephone Co) the slower your connection. It's possible that my husband's shop is just very close to the hub.

I have not had a single problem with the cable, though. I've had it for about 6 months now, and I only know of it going out once, for about 30 minutes, because of a thunderstorm.

15. It's Cable MODEM or DSL
They are different.:silly:

Cable can really SUCK if you have a crappy Cable company. My cable MODEM got a lot faster when COMCAST took over from ATT Broadband.

AND...When your Cable TV is out, so is your Internet connection.

I can't remember which site I tested my connection with, but go to Google and search (dsl speed test), these sites will tell you a lot about your provider and speed

19. Actually, it's got 3 plugs on it and
there's 2 hookups from the main box.

I had @home service here originally through comcast but when @home went belly up, our comcast franchise didn't bother to let their customers know and I got up one morning to find I had no internet connection. Comcast here will never get another penny from me. (But I hear good things about them in other areas so don't start doubting them if that's what you have.)

25. Totally depends on ISP, but cable is generally much better...
for speed and reliability. Again, can vary greatly. I work with 240 retail stores nationwide that depend on rock solid internet stability... all varying providers and connections. Cable is by far the most dependable. My service at home with Time Warner (Road Runner) is solid. Level 1 support is garbage, but that's the case on anything.

26. I prefer DSL... but,
A dedicated connection means neighbors on the same segment (either apartments or homes in the vicinity) won't drain it.

Comcast's download speed of 3mbs was nice, but the upload speed of 256k was limiting. As I do a lot of onlime gaming and uploading to my web sites, upload speed means more to me. But if you're mainly downloading or reading web pages, there is NOTHING wrong with that upload speed.

Cable companies chare more for legal multi-computer use. As all network products have their own MAC addresses, they (now or soon) can do a simple trace to find out what's at the other end and shut it down. By hook or by crook, they will.

You're right on ditching those money-driven asswipes though.

27. I know others have said it, but no one has cable DSL
You either get cable broadband, or DSL.

I used to have DSL through Verizon, which was great.

But now I have cable. Faster throughput, same price, and more steadily on and working than Verizon was (though Verizon did a pretty damn good job; but their smtp servers had a tendancy to want to go down and not work for days at a time).

I used to shy away from cable, just because the bandwidth was shared by everyone on the cable line, but the bandwidth at the source is so high now that even with a hella lot of people sharing one cable line, there isn't much difference.

28. Grande Cable just plain sucks
but in the apartment building I'm in it is our "prefered" provider, which means our only choice. I hate it. I went nearly two months with the connection going out several times a day. One time for 30 hrs straight. On the 15th trip out here (not an exageration) the repairmen finally figured out the problem. Still, I am bitter with my experience with Grande and part of the process of where to live next will be making sure Grande is not the cable provider.

I've had Time Warner's Road Runner and had great service with them. Much faster than Grande for the same price, and it only went down one time in the year I had them. Still, they are connected with AOL, which I hate, so I'd probably like to give DSL with SBC a try too before I went back to them.
