26. Jewel-Osco is going gangbusters out here, too.
I just bought an Outpost share, though, and I live close enough to three different Sendik's locations that I won't have to go to Jewel very often. (Their produce, at least here, is awful.)

19. Albertsons, King Soopers, Safeway, Wholefoods, Alfalfa's.
Cub pulled out, and Mall Wart and Target both have Super centers. There are no locally owned and operated full grocers, so I'm doing this hodge podge of Wholefoods, Alfalfa's, Pan Pacific (the Asian grocery that IS locally owned), a local butcher and a local dairy.

Grr... Albertsons and Kroger are both big R contributors, and Safeway has been anti-union for a significant period of time, as well as the fact that the local one is just scary and smells bad so I won't shop there anyway.

the one that existed when Albertsons and Kroger were still viable. It was competitive and wonderful for the consumer. I moved away from TX six years ago and missed HEB right off the bat. (i didn't expect to miss a freaking grocery store!) Then I moved back to TX for a year in 2003...blech. HEB changed man. prices went up and cust. service is not the same. Boo Hoo.

But I've lived in places with:
Giant, Food Lion, Safeway, Fresh Fields, Trader Joe's, Angelo's, Shaw's, Pueblo Supermercato, Piggly Wiggly, Star Market, Market Basket aka DeMoulas', Tedesco, Wild Oats, Wild Harvest, Tesco's, Standa con Supermercato, and Ali's kuchi store...to name a few off the top of my head. I've also been in places where the only option was the corner shop for dry goods and cans, the egg store for eggs, the meat store for meats, and the farmer's market for fresh stuff. The latter option makes the shopping experience very lengthy, though you do get to know the local businesses.

CENTRAL MARKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh I almost forgot Fiesta and Carnival, two chains which specialize in items Mexican/American families might want. Lotsof Mexican produce, canned goods, etc from Mexico .

And we do have WallyWorld and SuperTArget. I seldom buy food items at either of them so did not remember. I don't think I have ever shopped at a Minyard's either.

It's IGA here.

I miss all the great 2 4 1's at those stores. And Jewel used to have $1 soy milk often. I pay 2.80 for the same thing here.

Safeway bought Dominicks, but Safeway is too far for regular shopping.

And no one even knows what Polish Ham is in these parts, let alone what Krakus is.

I thought it was a joke (the store is real, and it IS a joke). I also got a kick out of Harris-Teeter. When someone build a superstore, one of the locals referred to it as "the Uber-Teeter."

They charge a bit more for some things, but they treat their employees well (so I've heard).

Excellent prepared food: chinese, salads, vegetarian, sandwiches, pizza, coffee shop.

Nice atmosphere all around, too. It's not all bright-white, but a more muted brown.
