CStT or anyone else: I need your help! |
|
I heard some jazz on NPR last night, and it put me in a strangely calm mood, the calmest I have been in weeks. Maybe I'm just jonesing for new music. Anyway, I'm not extremely familiar with the genre, so I need to ask: what are some essential jazz recordings I should start out with? I lean more towards free jazz/bebop, if that helps.

1. The basics would be Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue (Miles) or Blue Train |

by Coltrane. Brilliant Corners (Monk), Mingus Ah Um (Charles Mingus). Those are some first choices off the top of my head

I had "Kind of Blue" on cassette, so I'm familiar with that, but thanks for the other suggestions!

There is a universe of jazz - and I say IS because its still being created. I think you would really like a guy named Dave Douglas. This album is fucking killer: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000894PB/qid=1102601487/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/102-1664004-1612122
