Pay Pal Account E-Mail Scam? |
|
I received an E-Mail supposedly from PayPal Services concerning my account which I do not have. The E-Mail tells me some foreign entity is trying to access my account. It looks as though personal information is being sought. I did not look at the offered material so I cannot be sure.
Beware I guess.

And I don't have an account at either place.
Forward the E-Mail with header to "security@{yourISP).com"

3. I get them from eBay too |
|
Calling "phishing" or some such thing.
I send my eBay emails that request my ID, etc., right to spoof@ebay.com.

Except, they weren't actually from eBay. I just forwarded them to the company.

5. I got a paypal scam email |
|
you can forward them to spoof@paypal.com and they'll investigate.
Mine said I had to update my security settings or something. It had a link to press to access my paypal account, and then opened a window that *looked* like a paypal window but wasn't. It wanted me to log in, and if I had logged in I would have given them my username and password. Scary stuff.

8. I, too, have gotten e-mail from PayPal and eBay |
|
I trashed the eBay and reported PayPal to the company. Don't follow links. And don't put in your personal information.
Being a confirmed tinfoil hatter, I suspect this is part of the locking down the "Internets" scam that the government is promoting. :tinfoilhat:

I don't even have an account. I knew it was a scam since I get those things all the time from PayPal and CitiBank.

13. Sounds like you're already wise to the stuff, oneighty ... |

but for anybody else's reference who drops by to read this thread, I like to disseminate this information as widely as possible:
No company, bank, online service or any other institution will send you an e-mail asking you to enter personal information. None. Ever. Scamming and phishing have been going on since about 1997, when my not-too-net-savvy mother gave out her AOL password on a scam like this.
Another scam that people fall for is one that claims to come from AOL, Ebay or a bank that asks you to go to a web site and enter your password. Do not do this. If you have the slightest suspicion about it, do like Oneighty did and forward it to the institution in question, or if it's your bank, call them on the phone and talk to someone at the bank/credit card carrier/mortgage lender/etc. Most of these institutions/companies will call you on the phone or send you something through the mail if they need information, but none of them would count on e-mail to pass security information or make emergency contact with you about your account. E-mail is too unreliable, especially with all the scams perpetrated in attempt to compromise the security of your accounts or memberships.
If you get an e-mail asking you 'urgently' for information on any kind of transaction other than an online order, it's probably a scam. Best bet is to e-mail or call the company and ask about the problem.
