What do you like in your little burro |
|
I would probably eat burritos 5 times a week if it were entirely up to me.
What do you like in yours?
I go for some chicken or shrimp, rice, refried BLACK beans, avocado, cheese and sour cream and a bit of salsa.
I don't like lettuce in a burrito.

From Boca Grande in Cambridge. Has black beans, rice, and pork cooked in green chile sauce.
It's the best I've had up north.

additive :). Hell, I grew up in Arizona, eating Mexican food my whole life, and never even heard of black beans until I moved to a predominantly white area :).

Refried pinto beans are the best. Your typical canned refried beans in the supermarket are pinto beans :)

6. burritos vary geographically, I've found |
|
Being a native of Arizona, but a resident of Texas, I've had to do some comparing of Mexican food over the past seven years.
In Arizona, a burrito had what you ordered. A bean burrito was beans and cheese in a flour tortilla. Pure. Simple. Same with chicken, machaca, carne adobada, etc. I worked in a small family-owned mex restaurant for a period of time, and my FAVORITE lunch was a chicken and bean burrito served enchilada style with red sauce (chile, not tomato based) and goopy melted cheddar cheese and diced white onion.
In Austin, a burrito will have the meat that you order, plus beans and rice, tomatoes, lettuce, and you're paying extra for avocado, sour cream, and guacamole. This is all crammed into a football sized creation and some bites may be a nice mix of all ingredients, and some bites might be nothing but iceberg lettuce. I think that all that extra rice and beans and lettuce is just a way for the restaraunt to cut back on food costs and give the customer less of what he thinks he's supposed to get. Or it could just be a regional difference.
We're blessed. We live in Austin, and despite the proliferation of "Tex Mex" and nasty american cheese, we've managed to find some restaurants that give us good Mex food without trying to force their margarita menu down our throats.

11. Nope, they're okay, but not great. |
|
I think Chango's restaurants are very nice, but I also think their prices are too high for what you're served.
My current favorite restaurant is the Taqueria Arandas at 1st and Oltorf. Their al pastor is out of this world, and the chicken they put in their tacos and burritos is superb: tender, flavorful, and well-cleaned with no funny chewies. And their prices! My husband and I can both eat there for less than $10. We couldn't do that at Chango's.
Oh, and El Sol y la Luna has the best chorizo migas I've had.
We used to love Curra's but they kept giving us the hard sell on desserts and margaritas, so we've stopped going.
