Lindsay Lohan caught lip synching on Good Morning America, a nation weeps

On Monday, pop tart Lindsay Lohan — Mottola's big find for all of 2004 — was caught lip-synching on "Good Morning America."

The Lohan incident is akin to the Ashlee Simpson debacle on "Saturday Night Live," but this gaffe is much worse.

Simpson at least had had an album on the charts for weeks before she was "outed." Lohan's album has been out just out two days now, and the bad word of mouth could kill it fast.

For Mottola this is no joke. He partially funds Casablanca himself, so Lohan's album and its success is crucial to him.

NOTE: It won't be lip synching that "kills this one fast"...

5. but isn't that common practice?
on tv shows or movies that someone lip synchs their songs? If it were a live concert that is another matter since people are paying good money to hear it live.

8. I read somewhere that GMA has a "live...no lip synch" policy
Some groups / performers that use extensive orchestration and / or background singers are allowed to have a "supplemental" tape, but that is to be used only in conjunction with the primary LIVE performance.

11. Goodness gracious where have our standards gone?
All of my pre-packaged, sicone-injected, air-brushed, market-tested, nearly-talented idols are falling from grace. Is this the end of civilization?

14. Was it Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson that refused to lip sync on
Dick Clark's American Bandstand? Anybody remember that? Or am I having one of those alcohol related pseudo memories?

17. I know that EC did a switch around on SNL back in the 70's
but I have to admit I haven't heard anything regarding a dust up with Dick Clark re: EC or JJ during their heydays.

15. Interesting comparison for me
I've been watching The Beatles Anthology of late and finding it really interesting. I grew up during the whole Beatles era (born in '61) so they were seemingly always there for me. I'm sort of re discovering them.

It amazes me to see the early footage of them playing when they toured the world - the crowds were enormous and so loud the band could hardly hear themselves well enough to keep time. They had the world's simplest stage set - a riser with a drum set, 3 mike stands and a few amps. That's it. Compare that with the set of even the least known touring band out there now.

No one had even thought of lip synching at this point, or of using recorded sound to boost the volume or even of having the floor doohickeys (sorry, not up on my musical terminology) that allow the band to hear themselves. It was just pure singing and playing.

Technology is great and has allowed some excellent advances in music but it has also, IMO, contributed somewhat to a lessening of the talent required to make that music. Someone like Lindsey Lohan, who has some name recognition, can make an album that can sound good because it can be engineered to sound good. She can then go on stage and her entire set can be engineered to sound good. But does she really sound good? How the hell do we know?
