Other than DU/Democrats/politics, what's your cause?
Human/Environment/Animal Rights? The Arts? Others?

Just curious where our other ~DU~ passions lie directly or financially.

Me: I support Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Sea Shepherd and Peta financially. I love greasin' the squeaky wheels. So far, the only human org I support is DU. Also, Kerry-Edwards....BUT, maybe they didn't hear me afterall ?

1. Hunger, homelessness and domestic violence.
We cannot bring peace and justice to those across the oceans, until we have it at home.

Also, Illinois Math and Science Academy.

I feel most strongly about women's reproductive rights, though.

14. Seconding that request
Just over a month ago my nutrition restrictions were changed -- almost no fat allowed (my body doesn't digest it well at all). When you combine that with my husband being a type 1 diabetic... well, we could use all the help we can get. :)

15. I can empathise, my mother was schizophrenic
I visited her loads of times in psychiatric hospital. As a result of my experiences there I have learned that mental illness is just like any other illness. There is still a social stigma attached to mental illness in some quarters but education is gradually breaking that down.

I saw the community that the patients had and partly got inside their little world. They had their own sense of community and the staff were wonderful. I am immensely grateful for the love and care my mother received over the years. The nurses, more so than the psychiatrists, were just lovely people. I love them for what they did for her.

When I shuffle off this mortal coil some of my wealth will go to that hospital. The rest goes to cancer care - the relatives will get nothing more than a token gesture. They don't need it anyway...they are well off.

NAMI membership is a great thing to have if you've got mental health issues. Also, join your state and/or local chapter if you can. I've found the support there to be amazing. :)

7. Live Entertainment
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 04:54 PM by Abelman
And it's awesomeness. I try not to watch TV if I can help it. I'm also big on environmentalism, especially alternate fuel sources. And EDUCATION. That's the biggest.

Live Entertainment and getting unplugged is, ironically, my main focus. Working with kids, I am ashamed by our main programming for them which is usually a movie. I prefer interactive activities which get the kids moving and thinking.

one Edit: I'm a big proponent of progressive and creative education. My dream is to someday work at an alternative school modeled on a summer camp. It would be charter style, but most classes would take place outdoors and it would be the healthiest greatest school ever.

17. Well, let's see
I support women's rights, animal welfare and rights, environmental causes, free speech, human rights violations both here and around the world, groups that deal with wilderness and preservations, such as the Nature Conservancy, and wildlife causes such as WWF, Wildlife Conservation and International Wildlife Coalition. Also, believe it or not, the Federal (NOT the local!) Fish and Game department, which plays a massive role in preventing smugglers from dealing with live birds, narwhal tusks, rhino horns, and other illegal and questionable trades.

19. Destroying superstitious thought
ESP, psychics, talking to the dead, faith-healing, etc.

Normally though explanation of very simple performance magic principles (so I don't give away any secrets so I demonstrate how these fakers do their scams. Throw in a little bit about the scientific method, etc. Unfortunately, during an ESP test with a deck of cards, I convinced a woman I actually did have ESP and could read her mind. :(

Worker's rights, fair compensation, humane working conditions and the like. I guess it blends in with the Dem politic thing. I feel kind of beaten down and bedraggled right now since I'm currently working a non-union job in Oklahoma of all places. Oh well, at least the company I'm working for treats its employees like human beings unlike so many others around here.

37. Mostly good - but sometimes they support unpopular causes.
However, since the US Constitution was written to protect the minority from the majority, their positions are consistent.

Although, sometimes, they file some seemingly strange things.

I also like to support Children's Hospital, the local food bank, the Cardinal's Stewardship Appeal, and at least one local public TV station. In the last example, I went with the underdog. :-)

In terms of volunteering, I have done some get-out-the-vote and other efforts for the Brady Center, as well as the Democratic Party.
