5. Courtesy of the Grateful Dead...
a snippet from 'Lazy River Road'

Way down upon Sycamore Slough
a white man sings the blues
selling roses of paper maché
with flecks of starlight dew
I swiped a bunch and threw it your way
where hazy moonlight glowed
Way down
down along
Lazy River Road

Going down the only road I’ve ever known,
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
And I’ve made up my mind

no simple highway
between
the dawn
and the dark
of night

and if you go
noone may follow
that path is for
your steps alone

19. Flattered. :)
When I was in college, we had this shakedown cruise thing we did whenever one of the crew got a new vehicle (usually some kind of desperately used car). Everybody piled up in said car and we did one lap counterclockwise on the loop freeway, with the long version of Autobahn playing as loud as we could get it.

Fond memories. :)

45. A favourite of mine!
.. though I'm much more into the long version. I had a moment in this summer where I was driving with my dad & his girlfriend to Southern France. I had been driving since around 4 AM, and we were coming up towards the top of a hill, and I could just see this valley with the Autobach snaking its way through & the sun rising on the horizon.

And songs titled "On the Road Again"

I give you "On the Road Again" by the Dead:

On The Road Again

Why I married me a bad girl, tell you the reason why
Bad girls will even do things on the sly
Look for your supper to be good and hot
She never even put a stew bone in the pot

She's on the road again, sure as you're born
Natural born easy on the road again

34. Running up that hill - Kate Bush
"If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."

It doesn't hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, it's you and me.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...

You don't want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.

Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, it's you and me.
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
Say, if I only could, oh...

You,
It's you and me,
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

"C'mon, baby, c'mon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh..."

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

If I only could
Be running up that hill
With no problems...

"If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."

35. The Road's My Middle Name - Bonnie Raitt
THE ROAD’S MY MIDDLE NAME LYRICS

I told you once the day we met
I wouldn’t be your queen.
Your little darlin’, sweet coquette
Just what my routine
You’ve been around enough to know
There’s really no one else
When I hear that siren call, baby
I just can’t help myself

I gotta go
I hope you’ll understand
I love you so
Want you to be my man

I hear it callin’
Sound so sweet and plain
I gotta go, baby,
’cause the road’s my middle name

Well, it’s hard enough to love someone
When they’re right close to home
Don’t you think I know it’s hard, honey
To squeeze the sugar from the phone

Guess the road is in my blood
’cause I’m my daddy’s kid
Just have to learn how to let me go
Just like my momma did

I gotta go,
I hope you’ll understand
Oh, I love you so
Want you to be my man

I hear it callin’, baby
Sound so sweet and plain
I gotta go
’cause the road’s my middle name

Here it come
And it sounds so sweet and plain
I gotta go
’cause the road’s my middle name
I gotta go
’cause the road’s my middle name
Oooh, I gotta go, darlin’
’cause the road’s my middle name

36. The Road to Ensenada, Lyle Lovett
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 03:53 AM by buddyhollysghost
As I lay sick and broken
Viva Mexico
My eyes just won't stay open
And I dream a dream of home
I dream a dream of home

Where there's coffee on the table
And kindness in your hand
Honey I'll help you when I'm able
But right now I'm feeling bad
Right now I'm feeling bad

Listen to your heart that beats
And follow it with both your feet
And as you walk and as you breathe
You ain't no friend to me
You ain't no friend to me

The road to Ensenada
Is plenty wide and fast
If you head South from Tijuana
Then I'll see you at last
I'll see you at last

But my eyes they open slowly
And they look around the room
The old man he seems worried
And there ain't no sign of you
There ain't no sign of you

Listen to your heart that beats
And follow it with both your feet
And as you walk and as you breathe
You ain't no friend of me
You ain't no friend of me

You can offer to the righteous
The good that you have won
But down here among the unclean
Your good work just comes undone
Your good work just comes undone

The sisters at the borderline
They're holding out their hands
They're begging me for something Lord
But I don't understand
I don't understand

So it's adios to Alvero
Tell him to stay between the lines
And if he sees that Gabriella girl
Tell her I'll look her up next time
Say I'll look her up next time

Because the road to Ensenada
Is plenty wide and fast
And this time through Tijuana
Well it won't be my last
It won't be my last

Listen to your heart that beats
And follow it with both your feet
And as you walk and as you breathe
You ain't no friend of me
You ain't no friend of me
You ain't no friend of me

59. That's one of my two favorites from the album -
I can never decide whether Private Conversation or Fiona is my favorite. Each is my favorite while I'm listening to it.

Fiona inspired a short story I wrote once. My Fiona is nothing like Lyle's Fiona, and the stories bear no resemblance to one another, but his haunting melody and that beautiful name made the story of my Fiona take shape in my head.

E
When I was a young boy evening sun went down

Stand off by the railroad tracks and I'd listen for the sound
A E
Of that Kansas City Southern man that'a a lonesome sound
B
Well I'd sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was outward bound

E
Well I'd dream about big cities

And the pleasures I would keep

Long about twelve-thirty thru the phases of my sleep
A E
I'd hear that Kansas City Southern, man that'a a lonesome sound
B
Well I'd sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was outward bound

E
Well now I've been in a couple of places

Seen a couple of things

Whenever I think back in time

My memory forth rings
A E
With that Kansas City Southern, man that'a a lonesome sound
B
Well I'd sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was homeward bound

Don't you know how the whistles blows

50. Sylvia Tyson's River Road.
http://www.quartette.com/riverroad.htm

Sylvia Tyson's RIVER ROAD

Here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road
And I swear, once again, that I'm never coming home
I'm chasing my dreams down River Road

Mama said, "Listen child, you're too old too run wild
You're too big to go fishing with the boys these days
So I grabbed my clothes and ran
Stole five dollars from the sugar can
Just a twelve-year-old jail-breaker running away.

CHORUS

Well I married a pretty good man and he tries to understand
But he knows I've got leaving on my mind these days
When I get that urge to run I'm just like a kid again
A thirty-year-old jail-breaker running away.

And here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road
And I swear once again that I'm never coming home
In my dreams I still run down River Road.
