1. There's a nice one with Chinese Noodles and Cashews... |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 09:26 PM by mcscajun
...a bit different from the usual, but still a Tuna Casserole.
1 small can chow main noodles
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup chunk style tuna
1/4 pound salted cashews
1 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup minced onion
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 325. In a lightly buttered casserole combine half of the noodles with rest of the ingredients. Sprinkle the other half of the noodles over the top and bake 30-40 minutes.
I have to admit...it's only about every 10 years that I want this, either.

Skip the soup and make your own white sauce! Milk + a little butter. Bring to boil and whisk in flour very slowly until it thickens slightly. Upon cooling, it will be just right!

7. All that work JUST for Tuna??? |
|
If I were making something serious, I'd make my own sauce...for the pedestrian canned tuna casserole...not worth the effort.

8. Besides - it's the traditional kitsch American meal |
|
With the mushroom soup anyway.
And the peas. Don't forget the frozen peas.

5. Do you mean that old one with the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, |
|
Mushroom Soup, where you saute onions, peppers and celery in 1/4 cup of margerine or butter and then add that with the "cheese packet" and more milk than the recipe called and the Can of Campbells to the cooked noodles?
Is that the one? :D

Cook some noodles. While they're cooking (don't forget to stir), chop up some onions and celery. Half an onion and a stalk of celery ought to do it. Drain the noodles. Mix noodles, one can of cream of mushroom soup, one can of tuna (drained!!!), onions and celery together. Add some salt and pepper -- why not? Grease your casserole dish (or spray with Pam) and add the mixture.
Topping: you can use crumbled up potato chips but it's better to dice up some bread crumbs and toast them in butter in a skillet.
Bake it at 325 for 20-30 minutes, until it's good and hot and the top looks kind of crunchy.
Buon appetito! :-)
Edit: Oh, you wanted peas so add some peas, either drained canned ones or some uncooked frozen ones, when you mix everything. I'd go for the frozen, I think. Probably half a regular-sized frozen vegetable package would do it but look for a good balance of green and tan in your mixtures.

is make a batch of macaroni and cheese and dump a drained can of tuna in it.
My versionof the old way friday night tuna casserole:
Boil a med bag of egg noodles and throw in a chopped onion and a celery stalk so they will soften and shorten cooking time.
Drain into a colander, throw away celery stalk. Either make a quick batch of white sauce (2 TBS butter or oil, 2 TBS Flour cook for a minute and add two cups milk) or use 1 or 2 cans cream of (mushroom, celery, chicken chicken and mushroom, WHATEVER) stir everything up and dump in caserole dish. put a TON of grated cheese on top and crunched up potato chips if you want. Bake at 350 for 1/2 hour - 45 minutes - till the chese melts and everythingis hot.
Must be served with peas.

13. I got so sick of tuna casserole when my ex and I were poor |
|
students that the very thought of eating makes me cringe! But I still love a good tuna salad sandwich now and then.
However, the ultimate tuna noodle casserole:
Lots of hot cooked egg noodles or elbow macaroni can of tuna drained grated cheese (muenster is the absolute best for this) cream of chicken soup (because ex did not like mushrooms)
mix all together and bake until bubbly Probably 350 or 375 degrees
Of course you can add the green peas, but he wouldn't eat that either.
(do you understand why he is an ex?)

Boil package of noodles. Heat cream of mushroom soup and milk. Layer:
1/2 noodles 1 1/2 can tuna 1/2 soup crushed plain potato chips
Do that again. Bake at 350 for 1/2 hour or until it bubbles.
The better quality of tuna you can find, the better the casserole. When I get fresh canned albacore, oh yum.
