3. Then and Than
I ate and then washed dishes. (time)

I would rather eat than wash dishes. (instead of)

6. Then and Than

I can translate them into Republican for you:

Than = 'n as in:
"That's more fun 'n skinning squirrels."

Then = annen as in:
"Let's get your pickup truck annen sniff some paint thinner."

4. When they're correct
"Than" is a comparative - for instance, "He's taller than I am."

"Then" is related to time - for instance, "We'll have lunch then."

See?

Be sure you learn this very well, because, believe me, nothing turns off smart readers faster - whether they're prospective employers, employees, or clients - than the proper use of "then" and "than."

(See how I worked "than" in there?)

5. If you are smarter thAn me, thEn you are pretty smart... haha
j/k.

than is for comparing,

then refers to the order of things, or it can be the other half of an if/then statement.

7. Than is used for comparisons,
then indicates "at that time" or "next"

8. Simple...
Then is used to indicate a specific time reference or as a consequence:

Then we will go to the park.
If you go to the park, then you will be late.

Than is used when expressing comparison:

This is greater than that.

9. Use "then" to connect, and use "than" to compare
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 10:03 PM by Straight Shooter
For example, if Bobby is bigger than Johnny, then Johnny is smaller than Bobby.

If you won't go to the store, then I'll go for you, but it's better that you go than for me to go.

That's the best that I can do off the cuff, but then maybe someone better than I can explain it for you.

edit, typo
