Burglar steals deadly poison from vet clinic

A sedative that acts as a deadly poison on humans and animals was stolen from the All Animal Care Clinic on Monday night.

Several other extremely dangerous drugs were also taken during the burglary that occurred at the Tucker Road business. According to reports, an unknown suspect jimmied open the door and gained access to a key that was used to unlock the safe where the medications were stored.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert to the suspects, or potential purchasers, not to use the stolen Beuthanasia.
“Don’t be tempted to experiment with this drug under any circumstances,” warned Chief Deputy Dwayne Troxel.

Veterinarian Jeff Osborn said the pink-colored liquid is used only for the euthanization of dogs and has a skull and crossbones on the brown bottle. He said the label clearly reads that it is to be used only for one purpose with no exceptions. One full 100-milliliter container was taken from Osborn’s safe, along with a half-filled bottle.

PRESQUE ISLE - Presque Isle police are investigating the theft of more than $2,000 worth of drugs and some cash from the Presque Isle Animal Shelter. Sgt. William Campbell said Thursday they had no arrests, but are pursuing leads in the break-in that occurred Tuesday night.

An employee of the animal shelter reported the break-in Wednesday morning.

Campbell said 24 kinds of drugs were taken.

The greatest concern to police was the theft of sodium barbital, a drug used by veterinarians to euthanize animals.

3. Might be someone who wants to die peacefully
The thief may have taken it in order to commit suicide. From what I've seen, death with Beuthanasia is painless and fast. There are worse ways to go.

4. That could very well be. However,
most, and I mean the LARGE MAJORITY of vet-clinic break-ins are by addicts looking for a good high from animal narcotics. I believe it's "Special K" that is, in reality, a narcotic for horses or something.

Our vet told us that they had to take such super measures of keeping their meds locked up b/c they'd always be broken into for pain meds for animals b/c it's a quick and quite potent high, and also their nitrous oxide tanks (I guess they're used in anesthesia) were always stolen as well.

6. Those types of meds have to be locked up.
It's the law. Special K is the street name for ketamine, a very common anesthetic agent.

My funny drug theft story concerns the time that the burglars took not the morphine but the APOmorphine (which we use to induce vomiting in dogs that have eaten toxic substances). Someone must have gotten a big surprise later that night!
