Poll question: Should I cut my hair?
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 11:45 PM by BurtWorm
It's getting rather long. I'm beginning to look like a Ramone. Now I'm wondering if I should keep it long. Part of me thinks it's time for a little mid-life crisis/rebellion. My 9-year-old daughter loves my hair this length. On the other hand, it's a tad bothersome and untidy. But what's the point of rebellion if it's going to be tidy?

4. Let it grow!
I say, "don't cut it!", mainly 'cause I'm doing the exact same thing right now. I've had long hair before but was more growing it long on top while getting it trimmed on the sides/in the back. This time I'm just letting it all grow out (currently up to five months with out a haircut after having it shaved mid-summer) to see how "hippie-ish" I can look. So I suggest we work on this hair-growing experiment together! haha

5. I didn't vote in the poll because
what do you really want to do? For me, short hair is easier to handle, just a few minutes on the blower dryer as hair grows quickly, but I refuse to spend hours tending to my hair anymore. What makes you happy? On the otherhand there are many variations to wearing long hair that I like. Just how much time do you want to commit to styling or fixing your hair?

17. Then go for it!
Your hair will always grow back. I can think of better ways to use my time then caring for long hair. Maybe, just go medium at first.

26. your hair will NOT always grow back.
believe me, i'm there.

:grr:

you better do it while you can, because you WILL get to a point, in the not to distant future, where you can't.

boy do i wish i could grow mine out again. (not balding, but thinned to the point that it wouldn't look good long.)

10. Dude, I'm 49 and I've worn my hair long since high school....
Bunch of old high school friends at a party-- 20 years ago-- once told me that that they'd all stay young as long as I didn't cut my hair, so I have a moral responsibility.

C'mon, let it grow.

12. Best of both worlds
Grow it long enough to tie back. Then you can be neat when you need to or shaggy when you want to.

Wore my hair that long back in the day (I'm 57) (!), and returned to my -- ahem -- roots about eight years ago. Had it long ever since.

14. Longer hair is trendy. The boys in 9th and 10th grade at

my daughter's high school are all wearing their hair in the shag cut style I remember they had back in MY middle school days.

15. Other: Take super-glue and make a giant Unicorn horn.
Paint it rainbow colors and put glitter all over it. Then your daughter will think you the coolest dude on Earth! and she'll get an 'A' for "Show and Tell."

It'll be practical too; the folks at the supermarket will get the fuck outta your way and let pay first... Do you own a convertable?

19. Donate it
http://www.locksoflove.org/

All you need is 10" of hair. So if it's not quite long enough, let it grow til it is. Then donate it. It's a great feeling. I let mine grow out over the last year and donated it. My two youngest daughters also donated their hair over the summer. We all have short hair now, but we also had a great feeling of accomplishment.

23. Just keep it trimmed
Your ends will tend to get bad looking if you never trim your hair. Unless you have hair longer than your waist, it will look bad if you never trim it. Every few months get a quick trim. You can tie your hair back if it doesn't seem to be tody even with trimming.
For all men with long hair who like it, don't cut your hair. There is nothing wrong with long hair. Those who have a problem with it have no respect for individuality and not worth your time.

Not enough men have long hair anymore.

Lots of men have male pattern baldness issues -- so I say, if you got it, flaunt it.

27. Depends on a few things...
I'm a big fan of watching "makeover" type shows; some people look good with long hair, but the fact is, most people don't. I'm always amazed at the difference. If you're worried about this kind of thing, might want to get a professional opinion.

If your hair is thinning, keep it short. In my opinion, guys with thinning hair look kind of pathetic growing it out long. It seems like a vain attempt at keeping hair, but only makes the thinning more obvious. My brother went through this, too (ALL the males in my family start balding VERY early). He finally shaved his head, but he still always wears a cap.

What is your job/lifestyle like? Are you going to have problems being taken seriously, or being seen as "professional" with long, possibly untidy hair? Who, exactly, would you be rebelling against? If it's Father Time, forget about it. You can't win, and it's kind of sad when you try to hard.

I understand that all of these conditions rely upon what others think about your appearance. If you're not worried about what others think, more power to ya! Honestly, I'm a bit TOO concerned about how I look to others, but that's just me.

Just my 2 cents (remember, opinions WERE solicited...)

:)

29. It depends on the whole cool grotesque/ flat-out grotesque thing
There comes a point when long hair on an aging guy passes from cool grotesque to flat-out grotesque. This public service message brought to you by a guy who wore his David Johansen do until he was forty :)

30. Will you keep it up?
I'm inclined to say it's okay to let it grow, provided you keep it in good shape with regular trims and product if needed.

However if you're going bald please do not attempt to grow out the last remaining wisps. My father did that and the old biker look isn't exactly flattering, even to old bikers.

The problem with men growing thier hair is that few men realize what a pain in the ass longer hair is and make the effort to keep it looking good.

33. On my honor I will do my duty to keep my hair Iggy Pop sharp.
I will not look like an aging biker or a 1970s band reunion show roadie. And if I find that I cannot keep this promise, I will get a buzz cut.
