The drummer in a band I used to be in wanted us to cover (all together now:) "Achilles' Last Stand," so I sucked it up and got a copy of Presence for $1 at My Mind's Eye.
We never did cover it, by the way. I fucking hate that record!

4. Ok - hatred of Presence (easily the second most hated Zep LP) aside... |
|
The drum work of Bonzo on Achiles Last Stand is excellent, no?
It was clearly John's last stand before drinking 40 shots of vodka and dying in his own sick
oh - the most hated Zep LP MUST be Coda

The door started closing with In Through The Out Door and snapped shut before Coda could begin

7. Does "Coda" really count, though? |
|
Wasn't that cobbled together out of leftover tracks or something like that? I don't consider releases like that to be proper, canonical albums. </collectorgeek>
And yeah, Bonham kicks the ass on that tune. It's why our egomaniac drummer wanted to do it to begin with!

In truth I know that the only one who would instantly back me up would be RandomKoolzip - but alas - he is a scarce commodity - not that I haven't enjoyed this exchange!

WTF? He popped back in for like a minute a week or two ago, and now nothin' again. I miss him - fellow SST freaks are in short supply in the Lounge lately, and his invective skills are to die for!

12. No doubt - I've been trying to encourage him to enliven the folks like you |
|
and myself - we need snarky intillectuals like him now more than ever. The more the merrier!
I only invoke him because I know his drummer hero is Bonzo!

One good track doesn't make him god. It means he was *competent.* Barely.
Fuckin' piker was lucky to find his sticks most nights. He'd have done just as good beatin' his head against the bricks.

17. When the Levee Breaks. The first few bars are amazing |
|
And he keeps on going for another 7 minutes after that. Nobody but Bonzo could pull that off.
And Moby Dick should be retitled "Bonzo Kicks Ass" for accuracy's sake.

ONE good track? Listen to In My Time of Dying. Most unbelievable drumming I've ever heard. Try Custard Pie. Out On the Tiles. Gallows Pole. Celebration Day. Rock & Roll. Immigrant Song. Nobody's Fault But Mine. Song Remains the Same. Ramble On.
Or, if you want to slow it down, the Rain Song. Or Since I've Been Loving You. Down By the Seaside. Tangerine. I could go on and on.
I'm now sitting here going through all my Zep tracks...it's insane. There's no one better than this guy.

14. Bonzo is God, Stewart Copeland is the Father, and George Hurley is |
|
the Holy Ghost.
Oh, and Jabo Starks and Steve Jordan figure in there somewhere, too.
Josh: I used to stay home from school and loop the intro beats to "Bonzo's Montreaux" played at 45 RPM over and over. I got real adept at "the pause button" on my tape recorder.
