Are you sitting down?.......!!!--I HAVE SPAWNED--!!!!
That's right we just got the official word yesterday.

"WE" ARE PREGNANT!!!!!!!!

Before yesterday my wife was just a little pregnant.

We did two home pregnancy test last Sunday and both came up II two striped. She did another on Wednesday before she went to see the Doctor. The Doctor told her in the office that day that if three of them came up positive she was surely pregnant but agreed that we should get an official test done. He called my wife yesterday to tell that it was indeed positive. We get the papers on it this week in the mail.

We were going to surprise our folks with baby oriented Christmas gifts and see if they caught on but last night over dinner we decided to go ahead and call them and tell them. We then called both of our brothers and all my "boys"-really old friends.

"WE" ARE PREGNANT!!!!!!!!

Now it is still very early-6 weeks-but we are (of course) doing everything we need to.

The President in 2068?

37. That's funny a friend of mine named his son "Henry"
The nurses at the hospital loved the name because it was almost odd for a normal name to be used and not all the Jordan Taylor and Tylers they see everyday.

Yeah it's real unique when everyone is naming their kid that too...now go watch Friends some more you dweebs (directed at the 'burban rabble).

29. Yeah we are going to go buy a house next month probably
that may sound strange but I am determined not to get all freaked out about something that is going to happen anyway. As someone I know who audits banks says,"Look they want to lend you the money"-he took 20 minutes on "signing day".

With all this going on I instantly decided to keep everything as simple as possible focusing on my wife and the whole birthing process.

My name is Jeff too but with my last name the two names tend to blend together. As simple as my last name is you wouldn't believe how easily everyone screws it up, that is a whole story unto itself.

Thanks.

after the dust settles, I suggest looking into doulas. I am one, and wouldn't give birth without one! (not a shameless plug for business, I am not taking clients, but a shamelss plug for my profession!)

Have fun! Very exciting experience.

I always remind people that it is one of the most normal, common experiences known to man, but also one of the most unique, special events you personally will every go through. Savor it!

I think we are going to have to take this one "by the book" due to my wife's age (pushing 40) but thanks anyway. I will look into it but we will probably go the traditional route-I have read some very good stuff about accupuncture-any opinions you can offer?

106. I have friends that have gotten a lot out of it...
I would recommend it. It certainly can't hurt. I know of one woman who used acupuncture and a chiropractor for pain relief during labor with great results.

BTW: doulas are traditional, just used to be that our extended families filled that role. doulas don't do anything medical, just support the woman and the family. an advocate that is educated and experienced in the birth process. check out www.dona.org for more info. I have attended all types of births, home and hospital, natural and medicated, vaginal and cesarean. :-)

Our doula was a huge part of the entire pregnancy experience, not just the delivery.

Women really are fairly isolated from each other any more--and unless your wife has a cadre of highly experienced "breeding" buddies, a doula can provide a huge amount of support and practical advice thru the entire pregnancy, not just the labor and delivery.

My doula was just a super woman who helped me with all the really odd stuff that comes up while pregnant. She helped me with all those questions that you want to know answers to, but maybe don't want to ask your Doc. (One great example of that is WHY does your poop turn black when you take pre-natal vitamins? It is all the surplus iron being cast off by your body.)

My doula was able to give me advice about stuff like what kind of stuff do you REALLY need to take to the hospital for the baby... (Hint: They really DO provide most of the stuff you need. It isn't necessary to pack diapers to take with you.)

Once you get to the actual birth THEN the doula REALLY shines...

I just can't say enough about how wonderful doulas are!!

Laura

On edit:

Doulas are GREAT for us older Moms. I was 37 when we had our daughter, and the decreased number of C sections with doulas present carried a lot of weight with us when we opted to have a doula help us with the process. They don't replace your Doc or midwife--they are an aditional layer of support for you AND your wife both...

60. Doulas are assistants, really--not exactly medical staff.
Chirldbirth.org is a good website, and here is a link to what they have to say about doulas:

http://www.childbirth.org/articles/whatis.html

If you do a google search on doulas, you will be amazed at how much acceptance is there for doulas in the medical community.

We had our daughter 7 (almost 8!) years ago, and doulas were not terribly common in the Midwest at that time. We were very lucky to find a lady who had left her work as a labor and delivery nurse (she'd been doing it for over 20 years) and had begun her work as a doula.

The stats on the number of C sections and labor complications are really a lot better for women who use doulas. Typically, women with a labor assistant (along with their partner) have a much higher success rate with unmedicated childbirth and fewer episiotomies. They have a lower rate of C-sections and report a much greater satisfaction with the entire birthing and post partum experience.

The doula stays with you for the entire experience. Our labor and delivery was not typical of most--I had a lot of complications--but our doula was there every step of the way as a support for my husband and for me.

In our minds, we initially hired her because she was OUR person--not the Doc's, not the hospital's. She was OUR advocate when we were most vulnerable. My husband wanted to be able to focus on the whole labor and delivery process and he felt that having her there really helped him deal with it all with a lot less stress.

Oddly, enough, she was even able to help the grandparents deal with everything that was going on, too. While hubby was dealing with me, she could go and explain stuff to them. Alternately, she freed HIM up to go and deal with family too...

I sure as hell appreciated her too. She did everything from bring treats into the labor ward down to rubbing my back and providing acupressure when I needed it for relief.

I dunno--maybe I should let the actual Doula on here do the sales job, but I have been a huge proponent of doulas since we used one...

Brightest Blessings to you all! I am just delighted for you!

Laura

108. Very big difference!
I always say that Midwives and Dr's do the catching, and Doula's do the coaching! (Midwives do a lot of coaching too, but mom and baby's health is their main priority)

Doula's provide non medical support. Emotional, physical, educational, etc... Check out the DONA website for more info. www.dona.org. A Doula is the only person in the room that their only job is to support mom and dad/partner. They are not becoming anything else, like a dad, grandmother, aunt etc... nor are they getting paid by the hospital, but directly by the family. you are the boss of them! They also only have you to attend to, no other patients, no office appts, nothing but YOU.

There is nothing like supporting a family during pregancy, birth, and postpartum; it's amazing. It's the best job I have ever had.

70. How exciting! I waited a long time for mine too
I was 36 when she was born, and it was the perfect time for me. Now she is 20 years old and a feisty independent little cuss who pretty much takes nothing off nobody. And she will pierce you anywhere youwant it for $20

Seriously you are going to have a wonderful but sleepless time. My husband loves to tell first time parents this : "Babies are wonderful, and the source of incredible joy but they are NEVER CONVENIENT". If you keep that in mind you will sail through the early years and wonder where they went.

So many people have these idyllic fantasies about how perfect it is all going to be, and I just sit and giggle, knowing that they don't got a clue!!!

my best wishes to you and Mrs U !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I was a very dedicated nursing mom, so will welcome any conversation she wishes to have on that subject!

dealing with stoooooooooopid school officials

You will be a wonderful Dad, UP, I just know this.

The best gift you can give your baby (and yourselves) is a warm, welcoming, loving nest for your child.

Giving birth and nurturing the little ones was the best time of my life so far!

Savor it, even the tough times of sleepless nights, for it passes all too quicky.

:loveya: for you and your happy family.

The women in the office are all over me about getting PRESCRIPTION pre-natal vitamins "Oh you HAVE to do what the Doctor says!!!!!"

Uh huh like billions of people haven't done this without medical advise. Not that we aren't going to get a OB/GYN mind it's just that I want her (she does too) to take as little meds or anything like that as possible. I am running into the "YOU HAVE TO TAKE A PILL FOR THAT!!!" crowd.

2 questions first:
1. Is this your first?
2. Are you going to find out the sex?

Anyway, congrats! Let everyone know how it goes. I'm waiting on my second now, and DU was a godsend for advice on the first.

PS, DON'T, just DON'T let Matcom get near the child. At least for the first couple of years. Give him/her a chance at a normal upbringing.
