2. The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher |
|
You asked for vampires... :)
Harry Dresden is the only practicing wizard/detective in the city of Chicago. He encounters werewolves, vampires, demons, and routine mobsters...all in a day's work. Think a cross between a grownup Harry Potter and Sam Spade.
The writing is quite good, all in first person, and there are six books out to date:
Storm Front Fool Moon Grave Peril Summer Knight Death Masks Blood Rites

5. I've seen things...... |
|
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams ... glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain. Time ... to die.

is good for vampires and other such things.
Tony Hillerman for mysteries set in Navaho territory. Margaret Maron for mysteries set in Red States with a Blue heroine. :) Clive Barker is usually good for needing to keep the lights on late at night.
