I saw "Angels in America" the other day-Great movie!
******************Maybe some spoilers************

I thought it was very well done. Brilliant acting, great directing, solid writing.

I think I may have interpreted it a bit differently than how it was meant to be taken, especially the dreams and hallucinations but it was a worthwhile viewing experience.

Anyone care to discuss?

1. I thought it was fantastic
Al Pacino was an amazing bastard, and Meryl Streep just proves once again that she is THE best actress around. Her Ethel Rosenberg was indistinguishable from photos of Ethel, and her Rabbi was terrific too - I didn't know it was her at first.
Oh, and I Loved the ANGEL - Emma Thompson. Too funny!
I never saw it on Broadway, but the HBO version really moved me, made me laugh, and brought up so many important issues.

3. Agree on many of your points
I didn't know she was the rabbi until the end of Disc One when they showed who each character was.

Yes, it did bring up so many important issues.

It moved me deeply, made me think, made me laugh, made me cry.

Everything you could want in a movie.

2. Was disappointed in the ending...but the first part was the GREATEST.

The first part of the miniseries (I believe corresponding to the first play?) was the greatest television I've ever seen...rivaling many of the best movies, too.

I very much enjoyed Al Pacino in it (best acting I've seen from him), but I felt like the end just kind of fizzled out. I also was slightly bored with the whole heaven trip.

My favorite part was when...Mary Louise Parker was in Prior's dream. They had a very nice moment at the end of it.

Jeffrey Wright (the black guy) is so awesome, also. He and Mary Louise Parker were also in the Broadway version (as were some of the others, I believe).

4. I kind of had a reverse reaction
Yes, the first part was really good-acting and directing wise.

I watched it on DVD and through the first disc, my reaction was

"OK, why did this movie get some praised"

but as I watched the second disc everything started to come together for me and I really enjoyed it.

7. Well, yes, the first was just a lot of set up.
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 08:33 PM by tjdee
And I had to wait a whole week (I think?) to see the next one.

So during that time I thought about different outcomes, etc. and when I actually SAW the second part, it wasn't *as* great as the first.

Perhaps if I'd seen it as one piece I'd feel differently.

I would agree that the second is more powerful in terms of the Roy Cohn story, certainly. They had me all the way up to Belize going through Roy's refrigerator. But then...eh...seemed kind of anti-climactic maybe? It's been awhile though. I'll try to pick it up on dvd.

8. Throughout the first part, I was waiting to be moved
and in the second part, bam!, it happened.

I thought Justin Kirk was amazing.

9. Pretty much agree with you.
I've watched it again since HBO has replayed it here recently, but I've avoided watching the end, since it did disappoint me.

I know, I know, I gotta sit through the end again just to compare my reactions. Just haven't been done it to yet.

Overall, I thought it was pretty incredible, and very moving.

6. Yeah, you need a whole day just to watch it and
let it all sink in. I found it to be very deep at times.
