I couldn't stand disco when it was big in the late '70s. In fact, I did everything in my power to avoid it back then.
But in the early '90s, the Rhino label put out a pair of CDs called THE DISCO YEARS. To my surprise, they contained a number of tunes that I had secretly kinda liked when they were on the charts. So I said what the hell, and cought the CDs.
Now that disco was no longer constantly in my face, I was able to examine the genre more objectively. I concluded that a lot of disco still sucked, but the best stuff was damned good!
In case you give a damn, my all-time favorite disco tune is Lipps, Inc's outstanding "Funkytown," released in 1980, just as the phenomenon was becoming commercially moribund. Go figure.

While I love music with a message, there's nothing wrong with letting it all go and grooving to the beat. Disco's got some great stuff. Highly original and, let's face it, it's the only genre that could put the violin amongst other string instruments to new heights! :D

13. Of course, the violins were synthesized, but who the hell cares? |

When I listen to "Funkytown," I truly experience heaven on earth!

15. Hmm.... I can't recall a disco tune called "Snorkel the Sausage." |
|
There were, of course, a whole lotta disco tunes that were overtly gay-themed. "Cruisin' The Streets" by the Peech Boys jumps to mind immediately!

But hate hat XM radio has hijacked the disco channel ("Chrome") to play Christmas music for the entire month. Oh well, guess I'll have to rent Staying Alive to get my fix.
