I'm listening to the "Fruit Tree" box set. Intriguing, relaxing music. ('cept for 'Black Dog', which is too morbid for me). Are the 24-bit remasters worth getting?

The problem is in the A/D and D/A converters themselves. Even the latest state-of-the-art 24-bit converters used in the MasterLink don't reach the 122 dB dynamic range theoretically possible with 20-bit storage. That means a 24-bit recording's benefits are mostly lost in the noise floor of the converter. And this technology is slow to advance, because we're nearing thermal noise floors and power limitations in the chips themselves. At the moment, we're living in an 20-bit equivalent world.
