Was I the only kid who used to leave Santa a shot and a beer? |
|
(better known as a "boilermaker") Also, a carrot for Rudy, of course.

We always left Santa about about 3 fingers of 'the best' we had in the house, usually Hennessy cognac or Jameson's.

Well, I was, until we moved to Oak Lawn. My Gran still is, however.

We left Santa a beer and a sandwich. In the morning, both were always gone.

6. Near Clark and Peterson here. |
|
The Irish blood came from my father, who was born and raised in Elgin. Must be an Oirish thing no matter where you come from....

9. Too true! Somehow the "holy water" featured prominently |

in our household for sociability, medication and blessings!

21. My Irish grandfather (he was born in Elgin) was an undertaker... |
|
...who enjoyed the gargle way too much. He also died when my father was 10 of the Spanish influenza.
The family lived with my father's paternal grandparents, who were Swiss and German. Grandpa made his own stash, especially when Prohibition started, as did my mother's Luxembourgisch father.
So it comes naturally to me on both sides.

Moved to America when I was 10. I remember that first Christmas well, as my 3 younger brothers' #1 worry was whether or not Santa would know where we were, since we had moved to America.

|
Not really west sider, but my folks lived there, then Franklin Park then further west. You should have seen the parking lot after the West Suburban Irish American club christmas party. It was like f'n bumper cars. Ah, memories.

11. isn't that somewhat irresponsible? |
|
no wonder I rarely received the things I asked Santa for. Between you folks, and who knows how many others getting Ol' Saint Nick all jollied up, I'm surprised he could even remember my address by the time he reached the west coast.
