Why Commercial Radio Sucks: Part 874
I just heard that as of January 10th, the new morning D.J. on New York's oldies station, WCBS-FM, will be none other than ex-Monkee Mickey Dolenz.

Over the last decade or so, tens of thousands of broadcasting professionals have lost their jobs, replaced by automation, network feeds, and other personality-killing technology. And what does CBS-FM do when it needs a new morning man? Why, it hires a has-been pop singer!

I am so-o-o glad I got the hell outta of commercial radio back in 1995...!

1. Just when you think it can't get any worse
and then Surprise, it does...Like so many other things...

Radio is a sorry shadow for what it once was. Non-commercial radio isn't much better.

3. 1995 is the year I got out of it too.
And I can't dispute a THING you said in this post. Radio, sadly, is not what it used to be.

4. As long as they don't find a way to do away with local news guys
I'm safe. However...I work for an independent station. The big corp station in town is run by accountants and their news is terrible.

5. As in many things, the major markets suck.
Innovation can still be found at commercial stations in the hinterlands. That's where radio's renewal will come from. Mark my words.

7. I run my own internet station...
play what I want, when, I want, w/o having to worry about company suits. I'm not making any money off it (either are my DJ's), but I'm much, much happier..

11. Right on!
Want to do a link exchange? I'll be more then happy to put a link to your station on my site, especially since i really don't have a soul show on mine. Great site by the way; I'll be tuning in...

8. But Mickey is my favorite Monkee!
And they did write some of their own songs, even on the first record. By the time Head came out, originals made up nearly half of the albums.

Not to pick a fight, but did you say the same thing when Isaac Hayes got a morning show in NY?

9. Yes, I said the same thing when Isaac Hayes got an a.m. show in NYC.
I also said it when Air America filled its schedule with celebrities who had never done radio before. With all the broadcasting professionals who can't find work, it's obscene that so many stations have brought new talent in from outside the business!

13. Not to mention the endlesss commercials clogging up the airwaves.
I have a 20 minute drive to work, and if my commute starts at the same time the commercials do, all I hear are commercials all the way to work. It sucks.

14. Mm-hmm.
As much as I love Air America, the commercial breaks (necessary though they are) annoy the crap out of me!
