2. Weren't the charges against him discredited???
I had heard the charges were dropped, but because his reputation was ruined he descended into alcoholism...a sad story...

6. I've heard that, but I have heard whitewash, too
I suppose it depends on which account you read. Some speculation that his fame swayed the jury. From what I've read the facts are him drunk and alone with girl, a bottle, death of said girl. Sad case, certainly.

He was already a big drinker before the incident, loss of career makes a drunk an alcoholic.

4. He's the poster boy for media irresponsibility.
Seems to me he was a good guy, and innocent of the charges, but crucified by a sensationalist media.

Buster Keaton was a great pal. And anyone okay by Buster is okay by me.

7. He was found not guilty
And I truly believe he wasn't guilty. He was the victim of a horrific media witch hunt led by William Randolph Hearst.

He did make a short comeback as a sound director right before his death. He worked under the moniker "Will B. Good."

9. 2-10, 10-2 and aquittal
must have been a pretty wild time. Yeah, lots of media, lots of fault to go around for letting the girl languish in a hotel bed for three days before they took her to a hospital. A nasty story all around.

10. Sadly, even with immediate treatment she would have likely died
Without antibiotics, injuries like that were often fatal. Likewise for Valentino's untimely death from peritonitis.

13. If this movie gets made by someone else because of your loose lips...
then I'm going to drunkenly waste away in your basement mumbling incoherently about once being able to be a contender.

8. Fascinating story. Yes, the charges against him were discredited.
I think he went through three trials over it, the last one acquitting him. He was the victim of a whore who died from a botched abortion. They blamed it on him, not the doctor.

I still watch his shorts with Buster Keaton. Great stuff.

He's one of the first examples of what the media can do to a person no matter what the facts are.
