"Redouble our efforts" ? Zero times 2 times 2 equals Zero!
Is this the most commonly unchallenged lie of the decade? This phrase gets used all the time because it sounds real energetic and positive but what does it really mean? To "redouble" implies that we have already doubled and that usually isn't true. And the "re" signifies a second doubling. Though the phrase is usually an outright lie, it can be true and be just as commitment-less. If you start with zero effort you can claim to have doubled dozens of times.

It is now a handy phrase for those that have done nothing, intend to do nothing and yet want to pretend they have done something and will do more.

Ah, to be a media entity in the age of non-reality-based reporting -- think of the fun they have with these phrases:

"B*sh Administration redoubles education efforts"
"Blackwell redoubles efforts to ensure fair election"

2. I hate those moronic catchphrases
They're grammatically nonsensical and that irritates me. People are ignorant enough about proper grammar without the media and political spokespeople making up words like "normalcy", another of my favorites.

3. Yes they love the word "normal"
They always refer to the average temperature as "normal" when in fact normal would denote a range of temperature.

But they love hyperbole in general. I swear I expect to see CNN anchors asking their "experts" questions like "okay, using words that end in -est, can you describe what is occuring?"

(to whihc the answer would be something like:)"Yes Paula, this is the wildest, biggest, most important trial of the Millenium...."
