Poll question: Okay - it's settled. We liberals are hell-bent on destroying Christmas. |

So how are we to go about it?

I'm not a big fan of it either, but a lot of people insist on them.
I like to go to the tree lot and get a couple of loose branches just for the smell.

As offensive as it may be it does represent three religions in one completely tasteless display.

7. even though I am no longer a practicing Catholic |
|
I still think some aspects of Christmas are positive. I love a real tree, I like the "doing something good for someone else" aspect of X-mas (even though I try to do this all year long), I like the carols and the baking, stories of redemption and change, and I also like the winter solstice/celebration aspect as well. The celebration of a "savior" or bringer of light in a time of darkness is common in many religions.
(I know this was a joke poll, but I myself get a little tired of complaints about Christmas when there are so many positive aspects to it.)

10. I love Christmas, and I certainly buy presents. |
|
But I don't think my family goes as overboard as some others do. I spend maybe $500 on presents for EVERYBODY, and even that is more than I can afford.
And we only pig out at one meal - Xmas dinner. What's wrong with pigging out once a year?

5. Considering the fact that it's doubtful that Jesus was born |
|
during December and that the holiday was originally pagan in origin, shouldn't Christians--or more specifically the Church--be accused of destroying Yule (or whatever pre-Christian winter holiday of your choice)?

6. I'm not against a time to reflect on where we are right now |
|
but I am saddened by the annual feeding frenzy that the festive season has become. People are starving, millions of them, and the rich western countries indulge in an annual pig-out. The commonest complaint I hear from friends after the annual binge is that they've put on far too much weight. Maybe if they gave some of the excess food to starving people we'd all be better off.
Oh, and while I'm in self-righteous rant mode...so many people complain that they don't know what to buy their partner because he/she already has "everything". Good, so now they never need to buy anything ever again.
Sorry for the diatribe. I just get fed up watching people expand their waistlines while millions starve.

Heeding Jesus' message doesn't not require belief in a deity.
I'm an atheist, and an admirer of Jesus' teachings.

I don't think I have a problem with Christmas, but I don't feel like celebrating. Plus, I have no one to celebrate with.
Dr. ZeeLit is going to get me for ending a sentence with a preposition. :(
