Scissor Sisters - do they live up to the hype or not? |
|
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 08:12 PM by Adenoid_Hynkel
one friend tells me that the album is an overrated joke. the other swears by it and gives it his highest recommendation.
i usually value both of their opinions on music, as we have similar tastes.
does anyone here have an opinion on this matter? is this album worth buying? they're playing near my house soon and i was thinking of checking it out.

Definitely catchy and danceable. They have a retro disco thing going on. Pretty good live.

3. God, they were AWFUL on SNL |
|
I just...I'm just speechless.
And then on Amazon, I saw that "people who liked Scissors Sisters also liked"...the Killers, Modest Mouse, Interpol, the Shins, etc. I swear, I was just :wtf: about it all. Still am.

I love The Killers & Interpol, but I really really don't like Scissor Sisters.
Heh, funny, iTunes says the same thing about 'People who bought SS, also liked..."

12. i think it's more of a music geek thing |
|
those of us who tend to like bands like interpol are the types who really go out of our way to seek out music and bands. we probably attend far more concersts, buy more cds, and stuff - as opposed to the regular folks who simply get turned on to stuff by mainstream radio (or worse, MTV-when they actually play music, that is). i doubt the average radio listener really kinows MM or interpol.
love 'em or hate 'em SS are one of those bands with a buzz like interpol that are currently making their way through the alternative magazines and college radio to the same type of audience that's clued in to modest mouse and that probaly explains the recommendation. music obesessive types tend to give these things a try.

14. I can appreciate being eclectic in your taste. I certainly am. |
|
I'm a music geek from way back, less so now.
But still. Unless the disco/Elton John schtick is just a schtick, I really don't see the appeal to the geeks.
Kids today. Why, when I was a boy...!

17. i guess you'd have to be a music geek to even have an opinion |
|
i'm not defedning or bashing them. i dont really have one-that's why i was asking for input
most of these types of bands (scissor sisters, modest mouse, le tigre, etc) completely fly under the radar of most people and they don't hear of them-let alone decide whether they love or hate them
occasionally they cross over a bit , like the white stripes (who personally i feel are overrated) or wilco (who i love)

I kept hearing a bit of The Stones in them, actually.

They embarrassed themselves on SNL. It was laughable.
But then, it's really not my thing.

But give me something new, something challenging.
A cover of Comfortably Numb? That's just garbage man. Pure, stinking, garbage.

Who would have thought of turning it into that style of song? Sounded good to me.

10. I like the album a lot and |

I don't usually like any type of modern dance music or pop. I wouldn't call it one of the best albums I've bought this year but it is definitely one I can enjoy listening to all the way through.

Not particularly moving, but certainly nice to listen to. Reminded me mostly of Elton John.
Competent musicians and songwriters, in any case.

18. I agree that they were awful on SNL--was it the mics? |
|
Something in the sound was off, almost like the vocal mics weren't loud enough. They were dancing and looking like they were having fun, but I couldn't understand very much of what was being said, and lord in heaven I certainly didn't recognize Comfortably Numb!!
I'd have to hear the studio album before having an opinion, but it doesn't seem like it's any better than songs my friends would sing while they were drunk--the band doesn't seem musically genius either.
Fun, I don't know that I'd pay to listen to it--I think you should go to see them, they do look like they're getting down and enjoying themselves.

I tend to like some crazy bands and people - but I was wondering the same thing myself and caught their act on SNL. It was really terrible. Bad singing, bad clothing, bad fag hag. (don't get offended, I myself am an adoring fag hag to my brother)
