Poll question: Do you think the Little Baby Jesus (tm) is happy Petersen will die? |

I mean, what with the Sermon on the Mount, and all?
But, hey, Jesus was Jewish, too, so He's gotta support the Old Testament stuff, right?

1. No, Jesus was all about mercy and what-not |
|
Right-wingers who cheer the death penalty talk all about Jesus and God, but do they know about forgiveness and mercy? Because it is by their own standards that they'll be judged, and by their own level of mercy that they'll be shown mercy. To me, that should inspire a God-fearing person to be non-judgemental, forgiving, and merciful. I wonder how those right-wingers justify cheering the death penalty and the war in Iraq with the teachings of Jesus?

I had a conversation with someone who said they opposed abortion because they were catholic, but thought the death penalty was okay. I pointed out her seemingly blatent hypocrisy and she didn't get it. It was seriously like watching gerbils look at the wheel and shrug.
edit: Oh, and her boyfriend (who is a buddy of mine) told me to back off because "she doesn't get into that stuff..."

13. Many of my fellow Catholics feel that way ... |
|
I don't understand how they can square the "cognitive dissonance"
What part of "Thou shalt not kill" doesn't also apply to state/government sponsored executions?
It's troubling to me but as a liberal Catholic, my duty is to live the best life I can - NOT to force my fellow Catholics (or other Americans) to believe what I know in my heart and soul is right.
Sometimes it's very difficult to interact with RW Catholics who hyper focus on the abortion issue. I have to often leave the area before I say something I might regret.

before he could talk and say all that stuff that runs counter to their "christianity" But I'm sure that they would most prefer "Little Fetus Jesus"

11. Nah, the fundies live in the Old Testament ... |
|
They have no use for Jesus and the "Sermon on the Mount" speech.
They're the "eye for an eye" crowd. Morality is how they choose to define it.

14. Allegheny County (PA) coroner said: |
|
Cyril ("Nov 22 Was a coup de tete") Wecht was appalled by the verdict. Called the jurors stupid (I am inclined to agree). He used very strong language -- saying he hopes these "Good Christians" feel good about what they have done to a very questionably guilty young man, and reflect on what they've done when they sit down during the Holy Days with their families.
(He performed the second autopsy on poor Lacie and feels quite strongly the "evidence" against Scott the Cad is circumstantial in the extreme.)
