those damn magnetic ribbons!!!!!!!

sucked in. whooosh.

most of you who have seen me post know that I am a hard ass and not given to cheap sentiment. the yellow ribbons are stupid (i mean who doesn't support the troops). And although I won't buy one, I am glad that there are some liberal versions. (support our troops---bring them home).

But I saw one yesterday that caught my eye. It was the conventional kind but s/he had written in a boy's name with the years 1982-2004 (or something like that...he couldn't have been more than 23).

oh man. now obviously this is has been made personal, but I feel like before we can jump all over people with those stupid magnets (and I still think they are stupid), we might consider that people who put them on their cars may have felt compelled to do so as a gesture to a family member or a neighbor who is actually over there.

I think of the troops, still fighting, wounded, dead...and of the citizens, fighting wounded, dead...everyday and do not need to let anyone know that...and I not kidding myself, I still think that for many people, it's an empty gesture and also propaganda...but seeing that sticker really tripped me up.

It was one of those, I need to be less annoyed with magnetic stickers and more outraged (as if I could be...)

I am not actually making an argument or trying to change anyone's mind...I think I just needed to vent.

1. Maybe all the ribbons should represent a killed solider
Then maybe it would get through to people that supported *.

I remember the bracelets people wore during Nam of captured or MIA soldiers. Sorta puts it in perspective!

But I do agree with you about those ribbons (even though I drive around w/ a pink one) ;)
