2. I normally do, but
My most recent barber sold her business & had a baby and since she was the owner, she refused to accept any sort of tips.

However, now that I'm going to a new person, I do tip.

5. Okay, I'm not a man
But our whole family uses my husband's barber.

He owns his salon, so we don't tip him but alway purchase some products from him.

I read that you don't tip the owners of salons, only their employees...am I mistaken?

6. I hate tipping. If you want to make more money, charge me more.
If I think you're charging too much money, I'll try going somewhere else.

11. tipping encourages them to do a good job
or do a shitty job if you don't tip. That's how we do it in this country. Tipping is not just a city in China.

12. you are, of course, aware that the person doing the cutting...
usually isn't the owner (who you aren't supposed to tip) and almost certainly has nothing to do with setting the price.

17. I know. But the whole system is offensive and wrong.
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 01:27 PM by phantom power
Nobody tips me if I do a good job. And if I have a bad day, nobody pays me less.

Why should people like hair-stylists and wait-staff be paid at the whim of those they serve? It's medieval.

And because of this medieval system, I'm forced to guess how much they should be tipped, to make up for the fact that they are being treated like modern day wage-slaves by their employers.

If I tip them, I'm enabling this insulting system, and if I don't tip them, the employee gets the shaft.

We should fucking outlaw tipping. Make employers pay these people a living wage, just like everybody else.

13. Barber? What's a barber?
Whether or not to tip the barber is not a problem I have-- I haven't cut my hair in decades.

15. When my hair-cutter said that they don't get health insurance
I made sure I gave her a tip. ("hair-cutter", not sure what to call her. I'm a guy, no way am I going to say I go to a "hair-stylist")

18. My ex-barber cut an upside down smile in the back of my head once
right down to the scalp, and I had always tipped the bastard, too. It was down too far for a hat to cover it up, and it was summer so I didn't want to wear a touque (sp?). Had to color it in with my wife's eye brow liner for a full month till it grew back in. To this day we still debate whether he did it on purpose or not, or if he just screwed up real bad, but my best friend says it was definitely on purpose. He wants me to kick the barber's ass.
