I take it to be that Americans are so presumptous that they think they can bless God, as opposed to God blessing us mere mortals.
I much prefer the one I see in my parking lot at work -- "Dear Lord, protect me from Your followers".

12. I took it as being very arrogant also. |
|
Like God needs our blessing, not the other way around.

If you worship God, God will take care of you. Not necessarily true, but that's what it means.

10. I don't think so; I see it as a false idol. |
|
I'm offended by "God Bless America" stickers too.
Again, the fundie nutjobs who just barely share my Christian beliefs have forgotten to read Matthew.
Is Matthew being left out of current Bible versions?
Mine was printed in 1978, so perhaps so?!

And I believe He truely is to those who sincerely do do their best.
But I believe the idjots who came up with this arrogant, tasteless BS (I made a pun!) have some serious 'splainin' to do!

27. I seem to recall Al Sharpton saying something similar on the |
|
campaign trail this year. He said something to the effect of instead of asking God to bless America, it's time for America to bless God and he then went through a list of ways America could show it is blessing God by taking care of the least among us, healthcare reform, etc
