FOUR NEW "critical / security" updates for Windows today...FOUR! |
|
Rust never sleeps, and apparently, neither do Microsoft hackers.
If you have "automatic updates" turned on, you will be getting a pop-up...if you haven't already.
WHY do I post this? Because I like seeing the "that's why I have a Mac" folks come out of the woodwork. The first computers I ever used were Macs, and I only switched over to PCs when MOST of the companies I worked for let their Apple contracts expire and replaced everything with IBMs.
Now, my PC software (in total) costs about three times what my PC is worth. So GO AHEAD, Mac fans...HAVE a laugh at my expense, as well as the rest of my PC brothers and sisters...

Win98 users who refuse to upgrade?
If I absolutely, positively have to upgrade for some particular piece of software that that I absolutely positively need that requires XP, I'll still go online with W98, or Linux. Or a Mac.
(giggling hysterically at the SP2 controversy)

8. The only reason I upgraded is... |
|
...I'm a graphic designer, and as much as I hate to admit that I am in the clutches of Adobe and Macromedia. They're the spider, I'm enticed into their web, they have the software upgrade, I write the check. They've got me. There isn't a SINGLE day in the week in which I'm not using Photoshop CS. Not ONE.
Adobe adopted the policy of "no longer supported on Windows 98," so if you want to run the latest versions of these programs, you've GOT to have an updated OS. I don't even know if they still suport Windows 2000 / ME...I went straight from 98 to XP.
I've been very, very lucky after installing SP2. So far, no problems...or let me be more accurate...no "new" problems.
If I won the lottery I would buy a Mac G4, fully loaded, and just take a deep breath and buy...ALL..of..that...software...AGAIN.

thinking about replacing Microsoft Office with Sun's Office. Does anyone use Sun? Just tired of Microsoft and they do not take action on anything until after the fact.

Its based off of Sun's StarOffice and its GREAT, reads any format of MSOFishit with no problem, and the best part...its FREE! Can't beat that price.

12. I've used StarOffice and OpenOffice... |
|
and they are pretty good, although the latest Star costs money.
What I don't like about both of them is the way they like to take over the desktop, although that's not too difficult to get around. Star Office is the only thing I've found that reads Word templates, although not all that well. Both of them have a few downsides in functionality for me.
I ended up using WordPerfect for a number of reasons, not the least of which is "Reveal Codes." The Family Pack, which doesn't include Presentations and has a slightly less functional WP word processor, is pretty cheap-- 80 bucks, or less when on sale. The full OEM WP Office 12 is available on some surplus sites for as little as 20 bucks.
WordPerfect also has the best translation of Word documents of all of them, except for those damn templates. And, it has PDF conversion built in, which I use a lot.
