Bands you know are good, but you just never ever want to hear them again. |
|
This is how I feel about Rush. I'm aware that they're talented, that they have a great drummer, and they're considered "groundbreaking", but if I never have to hear Geddy Lee sing anything ever again, that would be fine with me. :)
Who could you do without? And you get shit for it from your friends, too.

1. Hmmm, I'd probably agree with you on Rush . . . except |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 08:35 AM by ET Awful
I'd phrase it more like . . . not that I don't want to hear them again, I just wouldn't make the effort. If it's on the radio, or someone else puts it in, I sure won't complain, but I'm not going to make an effort to listen to them :)
Sure they're a talented band, but they're too . . . precise. It sounds damn near like disinfected, sanitized music, if that makes sense. I prefer a little more looseness and flow to the music :)

3. Obviously, you've never heard any "unauthorized" live recordings... |
|
I assure you, Rush can be loose. I've got a ton of live recordings of Rush, and they can fall apart with the worst of them. Recent tours have featured "Alex's Rant", a segment in the middle of "La Villa Strangiato" in which Alex (the guitarist, for those who don't know) just starts playing really bizzare stuff, and making strange noises or telling strange stories, while the other two improvise behind him.

7. I've seen them live 3 times. |
|
And I've heard numerous tapes.
When you hear Neal Pert play an orchestrated drum solo exactly the same way for the 100th time, it gets a little old.

Although I still respectfully disagree. :) While I'm not saying both are on the same level compositionally, it's like listening to Beethoven's 9th 100 times. I still get something out of both every time.

as composed.
Rock is something different entirely. If you change a drum solo in the middle of YYZ and improvise, YYZ will still be YYZ. :)
Like I said, they're a great band, and very skilled technically, I just find them somewhat lacking in . . . soul :). I don't mean soul as in "soul" music. I mean soul as in that certain something that music requires to really generate emotion and feeling.
When I hear Rush, all I feel is . . . "wow, these guys really know how to play their instruments." That's about it.
When I want rock, I want emotion, when I want orchestration and repetition, I go see the Boston Pops :) :) :)
I have nothing against Rush, they're probably the only decent musical contribution Canada has made to the world :)

25. I'll allow Neil Young and give partial credit for Barenaked Ladies |
|
I'd give full credit for Barenaked Ladies prior to their fame.
I'll also give partial credit for Joni Mitchell (because she's more folk than rock, but has written and performed a few rock songs here and there) :)

32. Would it make you feel better if I sang Helpless? :) |
|
There is a town in north Ontario, With dream comfort memory to spare, And in my mind I still need a place to go, All my changes were there.
Blue, blue windows behind the stars, Yellow moon on the rise, Big birds flying across the sky, Throwing shadows on our eyes. Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless Baby can you hear me now? The chains are locked and tied across the door, Baby, sing with me somehow.
Blue, blue windows behind the stars, Yellow moon on the rise, Big birds flying across the sky, Throwing shadows on our eyes. Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless

2. Freddy and the Dreamers |
|
Actually, they sucked when they existed, and they still suck even though they no longer exist.
Freddy's "groundbreaking" hit: "I'm Henry the 8th I am."
Just the memory of it has me spewing chunks.

I'm thinking of someone like the Beatles, that everyone acknowledges are good, but some people just don't like, no matter how many people tell them they "HAVE" to like the Beatles.

Simply because her best stuff is never heard on any classic rock station. In fact, her best stuff is all but unknown, as it never appeared on any album. Some of it appeared on boxed sets during the 90's. There was also a Big Brother live at Winterland CD that came out a few years back that was pretty decent.

Their new material keeps dragging their old material down in my mind. And they have yet another new CD coming out soon. When was the last time they wrote a decent new song? I hate to say it, but retire already.

Their only album I care much for is their debut; to me it sounds like the work of a better-than-average one-hit wonder "grunge" band putting their all into what might be the only album they record. I guess I'd think more highly of Radiohead if that had been the only one they recorded. After that, they got "experimental" and the critics fell in love with them, and it all seemed to go fall apart from there...
My other nominees would be AC/DC (I just can't get past that voice), Beck (just not my kinda stuff) and Bob Marley (I know I may get attacked for this one; It's like this... I acknowledge he was very talented, very influential, had political views I can support, and seems like an all-around good person- I'd just rather not listen to his music.)

except for the fact that I can't say I know they're good. The band members, individually, may be very talented and technically skilled musicians; however, the combined result pretty much leaves me cold. And when it comes to Geddy Lee, I can't say which is more annoying: his voice, or the lyrics.

I was exposed to motown and the classic rockers by older siblings. Then I discovered punk and alternative rock on my own, all with disco going on in the background. Saw grunge emerge as kind of the shitty leftover from the 80's.... And then I heard Dave Matthews Band.....I know people who said they were really good...... Only music that's ever left me stone faced cold, shaking my head. (Ok I don't think they're good, so perhaps this reply is inapposite).
