Un Chien Andalou on dvd... |
|
Has anyone ever seen this? I haven't but have wanted to for years. It's the film done by Louis Bouriel (sp?) and Salvador Dali. It's apparently just a 17 minute piece of surrealist cinema done in the 1920's but which was completely shocking then and apparently still is today. Apparently lots of imagery from it has shown up in many movies since then.
I also just found out the Pixies song Debaser is about this movie.

It's a fantastic surrealist short film that was produced in 1929. It has some of the most strange images ever to be out on film - so strange and surreal that it caused riots in Paris when it was shown. I think you can grab it at Amazon.com. Highly recommended.

4. Yeah, weird isn't it about the Pixies song? |
|
Once you read the lyrics it makes sense.
"Got me a movie" "Slicing up eyeballs..." and at one point in the song he even shouts "Un Chien Andalucia!"
Now it's obvious, but I never made the connection.

8. That's the one image that sticks with me after all these years. |
|
The eyeball slicing. Pretty tame nowadays but back then I'm sure it was unthinkable.

for any film or surrealism fans. I saw it over 20 years ago, but the imagery is still in my mind.

6. The viewing experience won't be complete |
|
without a film prof harranguing you about its greatness, significance, etc.
I recall watching it in class and not even the eyeball scene could engage me. Could have been the hangover, I suppose...

...someone did a "Favorite Foreign Movie" thread and I listed this as one of mine. I think this was last week. Anyway, I've been looking for it on DVD for sometime now and can't find it. Have you?
Amazon has a poster of selected shots from it I might get.
There was also a book available in the 70's that had the storyboards for the film, by Dali himself.

Apparently quite a few extras on it. Amazon has it listed with that release date. Not sure how accurate it is though.

10. Oh, yeah, the cartoon 'The Angry Beavers' did a take off on it! |
|
Seriously! One of the beavers woke up from hibernation all "Euro" and was watching 'Un Beaver Andalou' (avec Johnny Depp!) on the tv. I almost broke another rib from laughing. Yes - it was that funny.
