Do you have a politically incorrect job?
I do. First off I'm a trucker. The truck that I drive gets 6.5 mpg and that's considered good. Then you have all of the negative stereotypes about truckers that a lot of people buy into. Like we're all speed freaks in more ways than one. This feeds into the political incorrectness of the job. There was an idea floated in California not too long ago to prohibit 18 wheelers in southern California. They hate trucks in California. This idea would have all 18 wheelers drop their freight at warehouses in western Arizona. The freight would then be picked up by smaller straight trucks and moved into southern California that way. Never mind that it would take three times as many vehicles getting around 10 mpg to move the same freight. You do the math.

Next, and this is probably going to be more damaging to my reputation here on DU than being a trucker, I haul transmissions that go to a GM assembly plant. What kind of vehicles do you think those transmissions go into? If you guessed SUVs then you are correct. They make the Chevy Trailblazer and the GMC Envoy where I deliver my freight.

So there you have it. Is there anyone who has a more politically incorrect job than me?

17. I lucked into it.
I was just the office girl part time here with no development experience. Then, because we're so understaffed and overworked, The ED and AD kept giving me more and more fundraising and development work to do, just to see how I would take to it. Now I'm the full time Development Coordinator.

I'm probably the least experienced Development Coordinator in my field, but I'm good at learning on the job, and I love what I do. And, actually, since I've come on board we have a surplus for the first time in years and have broken all our own fundraising records, so I must be doing something right.

:)

When in fact we are the safest drivers on the road. According to some trucks do everything from kill people on the roads to cause cancer from their exhaust.

55. Well, let them try to eat without trucks!
Yes I would rather see more things go by rail and canal; Both are more efficient than long distance trucking, but seriously, how would anybody survive without truckers?

Maybe it is because I grew up behind the bar in the farmers/truckers/bikers/blue collar bar we used to own in far west rural Cook County, IL, but I have always respected truckers and thought that (most) truckers were very safe drivers and good people to have around in an emergency.

58. Thank you, benburch and you are correct
Most truckers are alright people. We get a few losers out there, but by far the majority are stand up people. And you are also correct to say that truckers are generally safe drivers. I read somewhere that of all fatal accidents involving a truck and a car, the fault was the trucker's 22% of the time. And a trucker will in many cases stop for you if it's safe to and if you need help. Many drivers carry cell phones now and are often the first to report accidents on the highways to the authorities.

Another stat for you is that about 75% of the freight in this country is moved by truck. Can you imagine what life would be like if truckers stopped hauling frieght just for a few days? Most grocery stores only have enough food on the shelves to last for three days without being stocked.

26. I don't think my job is politically incorrect - but the fundies do
I own and operate a lingerie and eroitic boutique. In the front we sell lingerie, hosiery, lotions, lubes and oils.

In the back we sell movies, magazines and toys. We have 1700 pornos for sale back there.

The thing is, I feel so much better about what I'm doing now, selling a little excitement for couples and singles. I used to be a computer systems analyst.

In that role I:

Ran a credit card system for a private college so that students could enter the workforce several thousand dollars in debt.

Worked for a major upscale department store that sold overpriced shit to people who had more money than they could spend wisely to help make the owners more stinkin' rich.

Worked for a bank that handled major compaines pensions that could make or break other companies with its stock trades.

Worked for the largest coal burning utility company in the US.

So now there are people on both the left and the right that have a problem with what I sell, but I feel so much better about what I do now than when I was a cubicle rat for these fortune 500 companies.

Yeah, it might be better if you were hauling food or something like that, but we certainly need truckers.

And as far as SUV's go, blame the government. If my business could support a car payment, I'd be hard pressed NOT to buy an SUV. I can depreciate it faster than a regular car. So the IRS has put a strong incentive for anyone buying a vechicle for their business to get an SUV.

35. My job is not politically incorrect but
Let me say that I love truckers. You guys rock. I work at a grocery store running the back room, shipping and receiving and I work with drivers all the time. They're great, for the most part.

But more than that, my affection for truckers goes back to the late '70s when I hitchhiked across country (I was 17). Alone. I had the good fortune to be picked up early on by a pair of truckers and I rode in big rigs all over the country. Every single one of them was a gentleman and a class act. They all urged me to go home, protected me, bought me food and showers, made sure I had another ride lined up before they left me anywhere and fussed about me as if I was their own kid.

Whenever I travel, I stop at truck stops for my gas and food. I feel safe and warm there and surrounded by good memories. I've had guys take the time to stop and make sure I was okay when changing a tire by the side of the highway. I have nothing but respect for truckers.

Just wanted to say that. :toast: :yourock:

It's things like that that can make our job seem worthwhile. Chances are that those truckers that helped you out got as much out of that experience in good feelings and good memories as you did.

I guess its not controversial, but I used to work for a medical billing office. We mostly try to get money outta the insurance companies, who don't like to pay (needless to say, they're a pain in the ass to work with. Sometimes, though, when the insurance company refuses to pay, we have to hassle the patients and sometimes, these bills come out to be thousands of dollars and most of the patients are elderly so I'm sure a lot of them don't have the means to pay off massive bills. We can't afford to by sympathetic but one time, one of my coworkers, who actually makes the phonecalls, felt really bad because the woman who had to pay had just lost her husband to cancer and didn't have any money so she let her pay as fast as she could. That's rare though and I'm surprised she didn't get in trouble.
