"What part of "I cannot walk without PAIN" don't you understand?!" |
|
I applied for temporary parking space in the building's downstairs garage because my ankle is fubar (nope, still don't know what's wrong with it). I had a note from my doctor that says I can't walk much and I can't stand at all. That wasn't good enough.
The HR chicky called and said it wasn't good enough. Offered me space in "a nearby garage" which is only 1/2 block closer from my own garage.
There was a lot more to it than this but CHRIST, I nearly lost my mind.
So did my doc. She's sending them a new note that states the fact that I can't take more than 2-3 steps without extreme pain.

one and only concern is what's good for the company, they don't care about the employees.

2. Can your doc get you permission for a temporary Handicapped tag |
|
to hang from your rearview mirror?
Oh, and tell the HR lady that temporary disabilities are covered under the Americans With Disabilities Act and she wouldn't want to be in violation of that because it would be very serious indeed.
(I don't know if that's actually true, but I thought it sounded good enough for HR!)

Get the temp tag. It should be a very straightforward process - your doc fills out a form, you take it to the DMV or mail it in. You get a hang tag and a card that goes in your wallet that connects you to the hang tag, and you can use it in whatever car you're driving or riding in. Then, once you have that, the HR person will probably respect the tag and won't be in the position of making a call that isn't hers to make. :-) Just be kind if you can and try to leave open van spots if possible.
I went through this recently, too, with an ankle that just spontaneously went bad. People will be jerks about you using the tag if they don't see a wheelchair. Swat 'em with the tag. :-)

8. third that! Getting the tag was all I had to do to get a very |
|
convenient parking spot after some foot surgery. Handicapped spot in a much closer lot, good for two months!
If you have the tag, you can use any handicapped spot, anywhere you go...not just the office. You need it.

Just remember some people have it worse - Doc's doing tests to dertermine if they're gonna cut on my right leg or just cut some off. Oh well, I'll worry about that next month - gotta fight eviction this month.
