But "mantle" is not "gender-specific" any more than "romance" OR "salamander" are.

Also, a mantle sits atop a fireplace. The hearth is what the actual fire sits on. Two different things.

but one of the secondary definitions of "mantle" matches that of "mantel" , meaning the structure atop the hearth/fireplace.

The more common definition of "mantle" is a cloak (outer garment).

Since the word has its origins in Greek, passed down to Latin (mantellum) and from there to all Romance languages and English, I'm afraid there is no neutral, i.e., non-gender specific substitute.

The most common usage of mantle is as a reference to a cloak, envelope or some kind of outer covering. Although these may seem to be words that have a masculine connotation, the spanish word "mantilla" - a woman's scarf is derived from the same root.
