The Paul McCarthy: doesn't he strike you as a cheesy sellout thread
I don't know, just how wonderful can he be? He's seems like a smarmy sellout to me.

Oh, whoops, SIR Paulllll....made George Harrison feel like he didn't really belong in the Beatles....his daughter's fashions are TERRIBLE, she can't design her way out of a paper bag....is/was always known as the "cute" Beatle. Ugh.

:puke:

2. Can't stand him!
Someone, on another thread, was looking forward to Wings being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame - I couldn't bring myself to piss on their parade, but, DAMN, what a sorry load of crap that group was!

3. If he had died in 1980, it might have been different,
but I doubt it.

4. He does the animal rights and land mines thing
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 06:27 PM by Radical Activist
That's pretty cool. He doesn't infuse politics in his music like Lennon did though. I thought John is the one who had issues with George. He didn't want to play guitar on some of George's songs or something.

I prefer what John and George did after the Beatles over what Paul did, but he's not so bad.

McCartney wasn't the only primadonna in that band.... Both John and Paul marginalized George....

And yes he's anti-land mine and a vegan....

7. Paul and Linda's "vegan" pose
That sure took a serious hit, all their superior posturing and lecturing and "Love animals, don't eat them" and "Go veggie!" bullshit, when Linda was diagnosed with cancer.

To his credit, McCartney told reporters, after she died, that he and his wife hadn't hesitated to opt for cancer therapies that had involved consistent testing on animals.

So, it's nice to have principles when you're rich and healthy, but I guess it's just a matter of whose ox is being gored - or is that last phrase "animal cruelty"?

9. That's Silly...
They were vegans....

Most reasonable folks can distinguish between supporting legitimate tests on animals and opposing gratuitous tests and raising techniques...

Most folks would choose their mom over a monkey.....

17. Of course they can
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 07:52 PM by OldLeftieLawyer
But the Maccas made a real big career out of damning medical researchers and cruelty to the animals used in those same researchers' experiments.

They drew no lines.

Yhat's the problem with absolute stances, though. It always leaves you looking like a hypocrite when your --- ahem --- ox is gored.

Who wouldn't choose their mom over a monkey?

But, be sure to preach it that way.

6. I never cared for much of Paul's stuff after the Beatles
But I never thought of him as a sellout. They all went different directions and his direction was similar to the direction his work alone had always been - kind of bland pop ballads and such. I think they were better with the Beatles because of the influence of those around him but whatever.

I've always felt that all of them were remarkably well grounded for guys who had so much fame and fanaticism at such a young age. And what do his daughter's designs have to do with anything?

12. I didn't say his stuff sucked
I just didn't care for his stuff after the Beatles much. I didn't hate it - I just didn't love it.

Paul wrote a lot of great stuff and his collaborations with John Lennon produced some of the world's best music, IMO. When he wrote on his own, it tended to be more kinda pop stuff - nothing wrong with that just not so much my taste.

I have nothing bad to say about the guy, quite frankly. I think all the Beatles were wonderful and I love the music they put out together. I like some of the stuff they put out separately, some more than others.

I think virtually every band since owes a whole lot to them - they've influenced music indelibly.

And think about this:

What if, finally, the only surviving Beatle is Ringo?

(I have to go cry now.)

16. I'm Paul McCartney! I'm so cute & clever!
When left to his own devices, he's too cutesy and whimsical for my taste. He would have made a great children's song writer, if he hadn't been in the Beatles.

Yay! let's sing about raccoons, and polygons, and my dog named Jet, and silly love songs!
:P

19. Sorry. Macca rules.
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 08:01 PM by njdemocrat106
So do John, George, and Ringo. The worst Macca song is probably better than anything released in the past 5-10 years. Wings is good commercial pop music, and like I say, there's a reason "underground" bands stay "underground".

20. He's no John or George but he's an good guy. Played a SF JK benefit just
before election day, singing "LET IT BE KERRY".

Sure he had plenty of weinerhead" moments but came round more than ever in the past five or ten yrs.

See his Stern live interview a few yrs back? Very frank and funny. Spoke about sex, drug use and gave Michael Jackson crap fo buying up the Beatles catalog (partly Paul's suggestion) and not letting Paul buy back a few of his own songs. I like him. George is my favorite though.
