28. Here ya go:
Recipe for Roasted Cuy

For 2-3 large animals; serves 4-6

2 red onions, chopped
4 cloves of garlic, chopped
2 tsp cumin
1 tsp white pepper
2 tsp of salt
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons oil
annatto (for coloring)

Mix ingredients well and spread over the inside and outside of the animal. Allow to marinate for up to one day to allow flavors to meld. Before roasting, remove excess marinade to avoid scalding. The spit should be inserted into the back part of the animal and exit from the jaw. Once on the stick, tie the front and back feet, stretching out the legs. Put on grill, turning manually. Continue to apply lard to the skin to avoid drying out the meat. The cuy is ready when the skin is close to bursting. Serve with boiled potatoes sprinkled with coriander, chilies, and the following peanut sauce. If your community is especially progressive, rice may be substituted for the potatoes.

Peanut Dipping Sauce

2 tablespoons lard
annatto coloring
2 white onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic
salt
pinch of cumin
1 large cup of roasted and ground coffee with peanuts
3 ½ cups milk

Fry onions until golden brown, then add other ingredients. Cook at low heat for at least half an hour.

I had a guinea pig in university but had to give her up. Been trying to talk my hubby into getting me one, but he says two cats are enough.

Silly hubby.

9. my professor wrote a book about guinea pigs, or cuy
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 09:29 PM by Kire
there is a chart that compares their nutritional value with all of the other common meeats (chicken, beef, lamb -- I don't know, rats)and how fats and proteins and stuff are distributed in their bodies. It is supposedly the most efficient, pound for pound, of all of them

the Quechua Indians in the mountains of Peru have been eating them for centuries. It's really how they survive.

about the fortune teller who divined things by analyzing the innards of cuy. It was very graphic.

They really base their whole culture around this animal.

29. Question: do they need to be in pairs?
My son would like one, and I'm considering it, but I'm not even sure we have room for tw, and I've heard they pretty much need to be in pairs.

True?

Also, life expectancy? they are very cute little devils.

32. Well you could have 2 girls but not 2 boys
the whole aplha male thing can get pretty ugly with the boys. Patches was single and he lived until he wass 9 and thats a really long life for a guinea pig. So no, they don't have to be in pairs.

30. I love Guinea Pigs. I think they make the best pets...
Growing up, I always had one.

As an adult, I had them and my kids loved them. They're highly smart, trainable, and so cuddly. Sadly, there are no more of them in my future. At least not until my kids are grown and out of the house. My older two kids are very allergic to them, which we found out the hard way. :-( It started out with hives and turned into severe asthma.

Luckily, we were able to find a very good home for them.

Thanks for posting the pictures.
