Quarterbacks who were good/great right away: Brady, Manning,
Marino, McNabb, Favre, if I recall correctly...

QBs who got hammered on bad teams then became legends: Aikman, Elway...

Don't really remember about Bradshaw, Montana...

7. Montana was third string at Notre Dame
No one expected him to do anything. He wasn't chosen in the NFL draft until the third round. Guess he proved a few folks wrong!

Not to mention that I think he is one of the most sexy men in the world.

5. 10th or 11th pick overall...after junior year...
Maddox went down in game 2, is OK now, but is being Wally Pipp-ed by Ben...

10. What's "Wally Pipp-ed"? I think I understand from the context, but
where does this term come from?

11. Wally Pipp was Lou Gehrig's predecessor at first base
for the Yankees in the early 20's, one night Wally injured himself, and the young Gehrig replaced him, and Gehrig did so well that he stayed at first base for 2130 more games, basically Pipp was an established first man but Gehrig did so well as first baseman for the Yanks that Pipp was replacd by Gehrig.

12. He was the one no one wanted
I don't have deets, but recall that his joining the Steelers was ridiculed. Some said we got stuck with the bozo no one else wanted.

Maddox was hurt and unable to play. Big Ben got to play simply because there was no other option.

I love stuff like this....

He sure is giving us a reason to be happy in Pittsburgh this year!

The young one with the Giants (Eli?) stinks.

13. Anyone remember Greg Cook of the 1969 Cincinnati Bengals.
The guy was a hometown product from the University of Cincinnati. The guy was phenominal the first part of the 1969 season with a still rag-tag expansion team. He and the Bengals beat the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs. He ended up with an eventual career ending injury that year. It's a shame too. I bet Boomer Esiason would have spent his career playing in Cook's shadow had Greg been luckier.

Montana initially didn't really stand out because in the beginning he was on a lousy 49er team.

How about Broadway Joe Namath?

14. Manning? Peyton Manning?
I swear I heard on PTI tonight that even Peyton Manning got off to a slow start (0-4?) as a pro....

I may be wrong, but I swear they said that; would research it, but need to finish my federal tax practice and procedure take-home exam...
