What food and beverage can you not do without?
For me, it's peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a glass of water!

What about you?

19. It's really really good - I could go for some right now
I found a site

A refreshing cold drink made of rice, almonds, cinnamon (canella), lime zest and sugar. This drink is rumored to be a cure for a hangover and is frequently served at breakfast time. Even though the drink has a milky appearance it is completely dairy-free.

History
According to Sophie Coe in America's First Cuisine's, horchata was an old-world drink brought to the new world by the Spaniards and later enjoyed too by the Aztecs. In Spain horchata was made with with ground melon seeds but given the seeds were not available in the new world the Spaniards substituted the readily available squash seeds. Later almonds and rice were brought to the new world and incorporated into the drink as it is prepared today.

And Thanks!

23. I usually buy some at the store or at a mexican fast food place
Here is the recipe

1 quart milk
2 quarts water
4 cinnamon sticks
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup rice flour (or 1/3 cup white rice crushed to a powder in the blender)
1 tablespoon vanilla

Bring milk to a boil in a saucepan.
Reduce to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, until reduced by half, about 20 minutes.
Strain into a large saucepan and add the water and cinnamon sticks.
Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook 5 minutes.
Remove from the heat and let sit 15 minutes.
Remove the cinnamon sticks and discard.
Combine the sugar, rice flour, and vanilla in a bowl.
Whisk in milk mixture.
Refrigerate at least 4 hours.
Then pour the mixture into a pitcher, discard the sediment that settles on the bottom of the bowl.
Serve cold over ice.

35. hibiscus = jamaica.
Love the stuff. Horchata, too, when I can find the real, dairy free, stuff. It's actually based on a medieval recipe for a fasting day and was a substitute for milk in recipes. (Damn, this medieval history degree is so handy!!)

We make Sandia agua fresca (watermelon) in the summer.

I miss the great mexican restaurants from AZ, though. We only have one up here.

21. looks like tacos is the "winner"
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 12:42 AM by Kali
I am an old desert dweller and having travelled some when young know what a corn tortilla jones feels like - we used to send boxes to family that were traveling (My parents were in Russia one WINTER!) filled with cornchips and cans of hot sauce.

Two years ago I went to visit a friend in Germany - I took a pack of corn tortillas just in case. I was missing them by the time I headed home but managed. I think they must still be in their freezer.
