Tips. Tips! Tips?? Who - when - how much?
1. Pizza delivery - whether they deliver one pizza or three to the same house it's the same labor - does delivering more than one pizza mean a bigger tip?

2. Massage Therapists - they charge an arm and a leg - they call themselves therapists - but I don't know of any OTHER therapist (mental health therapist, physical therapist, marriage therapist) who expects a tip.

3. Self owned business - if a housecleaner running his or her OWN business sets his or her own hourly rate, do you tip in addition?

Believe me, I'm not a bad tipper. If anything I tend to go overboard. But I like to know and understand the expectations.

1. Tips are based on cost.
You should give between 15-20%.

And no, you don't tip the owner.

Holiday tipping is a different animal though.

2. Massage therapists I tip the same as hairstylists - 15-20%
Since they work at a spa too. They aren't the same as physical therapists you visit in a doctor's office.

3. 20%
It's not enough totally bankrupt you, but just enough to look unstingy.

6. Ryan Adams - what's not to like? But would you TIP HIM?
I think Ryan would accept any alcoholic bev as a tip.

10. NO doubt! Before he was famous I met him and he told me I was a
"pretty cool chick"! Quite a complement as I am old enough to be his mother! I think I would have to tip Ryan more than 20% for that.

5. 20% - waiters, waitresses
$2 - pizza guy
I read that you shouldn't tip the person if they own the business - has anyone else heard this?

24. 10-20% is customary
We own a news agency and employ about 25 carriers. 10-20% of the annual cost of the paper is a customary tip, at Christmas.

8. Pizza delivery, $ 2-3, Chinese food delivery, more, because
the restaraunt made a special arrangement with us to drive a bit further out of their delivery area to our neighborhood. The restaraunt charges us $2 extra for the driver, but I figure he is probably using his own car, and could make more than one delivery in the time it takes to come to our house. So, I give hime between $5-7.

Hairstylists, other salon employees, waiters and waitresses, 20%.

9. 20% ???? Depends on what for
1 Pizza Delivery - How much you been drinking?

2 Massage therapist - How was the happy ending

3 Self owned business - No tip

20% is a good rule of thumb for the average meal. The tip should GO DOWN when the price of the meal goes up. At a certain point I switch to an hourly rate. If the meal costs $500.00, I will tip $20.00 per hour. The average $500.00 meal lasts 3 hours, so I think a $60.00 tip would be appropriate.

20. Happy endings for 20%, are you sure.
From the legends I've heard the happy ending can often be much more than 20% of the massage price.

22. This site has some good info on tipping
and how much to give everyone.

http://www.tipping.org/TopPage.shtml

I found the site when I was trying to figure out how much to tip the dog groomer, and they even had that on there!

12. I also have a question about tips.
My wife and I were out shopping this week and decided to eat lunch at Jason's Deli. I payed with credit card and the receipt that I received had a line on it for "tip". And it also had on there how much "tip" to give based on your total. For those of you that have eaten at Jason's Deli, was this appropriate?

13. Hmmm, I don't know about appropriateness,
but I never tip where someone doesn't have to come to my table frequently with food, drink refills, etc. Jason's is more of a self-serve, cafeteria like setting.

They deliver, also, don't they? Maybe the tip line is for delivery drivers?

In a place like Golden Corral where it's mostly self-serve, but a person brings you drink refills, bread, and clean plates, I tip a small amount IF they do a good job.

17. Somewhere between 15% and 20% for good service, less for poor service...
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 01:26 PM by JVS
and not to exceed 25% (Going higher would indicate you think that you're some kind of bigshot)

Edit: and for Pizza I make sure that the delivery person gets a buck or two plus whatever coins would be coming in my change, so that he doesn't need to dig for change.

26. A note from someone who lives
off of tips. I buy all of my families food with tips. Most tips do not go directly to servers. In most restaurants (mine & hubbies field) tips are "pooled" then divided at the end of each shift. Wait staff gets 50%, and is divided between all waitstaff of shift. Bartenders (if there are any) get 25% and is divided between all bartenders on shift. And 25% to all kitchen staff (that gets tipped out, usually line cooks, prep cooks, lead cooks) to be divided betweenall cooks. Credit card tips in most places have the taxes taken out before you receive them (mainly because they are so easy to trace). One company that my husband works for (we have 3 full time jobs between us)pools and holds all tips during their two week pay period, then they are divided and added to their payroll checks so that taxes are taken out. I'm really not into telling people how much to tip. That should be up to them, sometimes you get great service.. sometimes you get shit service.. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on how tips are really given out and taxed..

27. I ALWAYS tip well in restaurants. Even with less than stellar service.
My question is really about other sorts of tips - the newer tip expectations, if you will.

And I fully support your position - it's important.

29. Understand completely!!
A friend is a massage therapist and she expects at least 35%.. She even refused a job because they wouldn't give her more than 20% (this was on top of her hourly and commision). So there are some people who expect alot!!

30. That sucks! You might be busting your butt doing a great job,
and get better tips than someone who doesn't care, but you have to share tips equally? Where's the incentive for excellent service? (other than personal satisfaction, of course)
