What started the '_________gate' craze?

The hotel was called the "Watergate". Not the "Water" and not the "Watergategate".

So how come we have contragate, monicagate, s&lgate, and everythingelsegate?

Screw the 'gate', folks. Or maybe the Watergate hotel will sue. :D

Which involved some Congressmen getting kickbacks from a South Korea businessman back in the 70's (after Watergate)

That "-gate" stuff then took off after that.

I think it's idiotic, IMO. I can identify an event or scandal without attaching a "gate" to the back of the name.

If they used "_gate" on everything, then people who don't pay attention would hear about the ORIGINAL and wonder "What was wrong with water?" and not realize that it was what started the real mess.
