Serious question folks (about sexuality polls here in the Lounge)
This is not directed to anyone in particular. But I have to ask - WHY? What is up with wanting to know peoples sexual preferences. Who really cares. And don't you think some of these polls could be offensive to the gay and lesbians freinds who post here?

Who really cares what 2 adults do in private?

I'm a tad aggravated by this trend.

Anyone else bothered by it?

Maybe it's just me.

2. I only care if they are hypocritical about it.
As in the rumors of the RNC chair.

Mostly it's not something I care to think about.

6. It seems odd to me
I understand someone asking if Matt Damon is gay - someone is truly curious about whether he is gay. That's a legitimate question.

But that's not why people post that Pat Robertson et al might be gay. They're doing it to make fun of Pat Robertson, and they find calling him "gay" to be a method of making fun. I can see why people who are indeed gay might be offended by that.

So you've got a point. If you want to flirt, go to a freakin' adult chatroom.

I don't give a rats ass what otherpeople do in their bedrooms. And I am offended by the constant "Is __________ gay" threads. I don't care who is gay who is bi who is strait etc., and the insinuation that being gay is a *bad* thing.

21. Because it's offensive - and stuff
To gay people in particular.

And it's juvenile - childish behavior and stuff.

Why is it OK to post crap like that? And why is it not OK to question the intention? Is the intention to diminsh the person who's sexuality you are questioning? And if so why is being gay a way to make fun of people here? It's offensive.

And stuff.:eyes:

31. Sorry Matcom, I totally disagree
It's not just 'stuff.' Words have power. Every single comment that equates gays and lesbians (or anyone for that matter) with 'bad' is oppression. This particular linkage has become so ingrained into our culture that even here on DU people fall unthinkingly into its trap.

"That's SO gay!"

"Don't be a fag"

"Is Rush Limbaugh a Homosexual Pig, or just a Homosexual?"

"Is GWB gay?"

Can you spot the theme? I sure can, but maybe that's just because for 34 years every time I heard something like that it was as if someone stuck a little knife right in my heart. I'm gay...so I must be a bad person. As far as I'm concerned, if I don't speak up then straight people who've never had to face this type of linguistic violence probably won't see it. So here I am, pointing it out, and all I hope is that you take a second to think about the real meaning of what you say.

*steps of soapbox*

but then again, it takes a lot to get my goat.

I might have gotten here a little late for the *party*

I think if I don't laugh once in a while, then I'm truly fuckt.

See a Margaret Cho video for further illustration of my point.

26. If some homophobic right winger IS gay, I'll sure as hell point it out.
Oh, man, I'm all in favor of talking about that.

Or someone...like Ken Mehlman, the incoming head of the Republican Party and a gay man...who goes along with a anti-gay agenda.

I had no problem whatsoever, for instance, with John Kerry talking about Mary Cheney, lesbian daughter of Dick Cheney, in context with the anti-gay agenda this administration is pursuing.

28. Reasons (#4 is my fave)
1) It's nice to know if a person is gay upfront. That way, when I ask him out, he won't beat me to a living pulp or kill me, then 2 years after getting thrown in the slammer say it was just a robbery that went awry. :eyes:

2) See #1. It's such a good point that it's worth saying twice. Especially the hate crime terrorist stuff.

3) As homosexuals get the treatment as described in #2, awareness leads to understanding. We're not vile, vermin, ungodly, immoral, abominable, or anything else. Not always to understanding, but we have to start somewhere.

4) Political ramifications. As in #3, but also with those aligned to political parties that hate GLBT people. We don't think it's right or fair for gay people to hide themselves, voting on anti-gay policies, to protect themselves at the expense of the rest of us.

Either which way y'all cut it, we cannot ultimayely be utterly silent.

Exactly, the Princess!! Right on! Good thread!

I am not really bothered by these types of threads because for the most part it's all in good fun.

But I think society puts too much pressure on people having to declare their sexuality. It's a private matter, imo.
