2. "Not Your Father's Oldsmobile"
...and within a year they STOPPED MAKING Oldsmobiles.

Everyone knows that "nots" get lost, leaving the lethal "your father's oldsmobile" meme.

5. Which was only a petty marketing ploy... for within a year,
they churned out new ads saying "We're making them again because our sales had never been higher!"

Well, duh.

6. Actually, New Coke was one of the most clever sleight-of-hand tricks
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 07:27 PM by LeftCoast
ever pulled on the American Consumer.

"New Coke" was entirely designed so that they could reformulate Coke. Coke was originally made with cane sugar but when they brought it back they were using High Fructose Corn Syrup and nobody noticed the difference. There is one though. Next time you're in a foreign country check the ingredients, they often still use cane sugar as the sweetner. Check it out for yourself if you can.

7. Nike's 1996 Atlanta Olympic ad - "you don't win silver, you lose gold"
What non-Olympian ad exec ever thought that one up? I'd give just about anything to even call myself an Olympian. Nike pulled the ad after a few showings - I think they had a few complaints.

10. SO disrespectful to Silver and Bronze medal winners.
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 08:57 PM by baba
I hate that mentality: "winning is everything" or "there is no second place, you either win or lose." Stupid ad execs!

14. It's disrespectful to any athlete who even makes the Olympics.
Again, most people are honored to be able to call themselves an Olympian. I know - I dated one. He knew he'd never win a medal, but he went and was honored to represent this country. How many of us can say that?

11. SN Brussels Airlines
To be honest, I'm not sure whether this failed or not, but a friend saw the whole series in a Brussels airport, and it's just too weird to be believed. We're still debating whether it's belgian humor or what.

Fair enough:

So sweet!

Oh. My. God.

That's really just well above the call of duty.
